Worth Knowing
Some of what follows is true of any solar water heater. The parts that are specific to this manufacturer are specific because of how widely its cylinders were fitted in this city.

The consequence is a familiar scene. A cylinder is replaced because it failed, the new one goes in with its thermostat at a default setting, and the solar contribution to that tank quietly halves because the element now heats it overnight. Nobody has done anything wrong. The person who changed the cylinder was not thinking about the roof, because on most properties there is nothing on the roof to think about.
The reverse happens too. A rooftop system is repaired, works perfectly, and the household reports no improvement in the bill — because the cylinder it feeds has an element thermostat set high and a timer nobody has looked at since handover. The solar side is contributing and the electricity is getting there first.
This is why we treat the cylinder, the element and the collectors as one system with one set of settings, and why the report covers all three rather than the part somebody happened to call about. On properties where the whole estate of equipment came from one manufacturer, that is easier to do well and more damaging to do badly.
It also simplifies a practical matter: parts. Where the storage and the element share a make across a whole villa or a whole compound, elements, thermostats, anodes and seals become predictable rather than a fresh sourcing exercise every time. What people ask, reasonably, is which is more reliable. The honest answer is that the thermosiphon has fewer things that can fail and the split has more things that can be fixed cheaply. A thermosiphon that has stopped is usually a fluid, valve or collector issue; a split system that has stopped is usually a sensor, a pump or a controller, none of which is expensive. Neither is a bad choice, and on a replacement it is worth deciding again rather than copying what came off.
One behaviour worth naming, because it produces confused calls: on a thermosiphon system the hot water is best in the late afternoon and thinnest at dawn, because the tank has been radiating to a cold sky all night from an exposed position. That is normal physics, not a fault, and it is one of the arguments for a split system on a property where morning demand is the priority.
Every solar water heating system fitted to a home here has an electric backup element in the storage, and how that element is set determines how much of the sun you ever actually use. This is the single most consequential setting on the whole installation and it is almost never checked.
The element exists for cloudy days, unusual demand and the short winter shoulder. It has its own thermostat and it behaves like the element in any conventional cylinder: below the setpoint, it heats. It does not know or care why the tank is cool.
The failure is not that it breaks — it is that it is set high. An element thermostat near the top of its range heats the whole tank overnight, and by mid-morning when the collectors begin producing there is no cool water in the store for them to work on. The system is in perfect health, the collectors are clean, the pump is running when it should, and almost nothing is being collected because the electricity got there first every single night.
A household in that situation has a solar water heater and an electricity bill that looks like they do not. It is one of the most common findings on our first visit to a property, and it takes minutes to correct.
The right arrangement sets the element low enough to guarantee usable water and no higher, so it covers a genuine shortfall. On some installations a timer is better still, holding the element off through the collection hours entirely so the tank is always cool when the sun arrives.
The other half of the element is electrical rather than plumbing, and it deserves the same attention. Its own protected circuit, a labelled isolator somebody can actually find, appropriate residual current protection and proper bonding. Where an element has been spurred off something convenient during a cylinder replacement — which happens — that gets corrected, and where the board itself is the limitation it becomes electrical repair Dubai rather than something improvised in a plant room.
And the element is the best diagnostic instrument on the property. Isolate it on a clear morning; if there is plenty of hot water by late afternoon the roof is working. If there is none, it has not been for some time.

Where an independent is the right answer is everything after that: systems out of cover, developer-fitted equipment where nobody knows who supplied it, properties that have changed hands twice since handover, estates with mixed equipment from several manufacturers, and — very commonly — situations where the fault is not in the branded unit at all but in the circuit, the fluid, the controller wiring or the mixing valve.
On that last point: a large share of what we are called to on branded systems turns out to be generic. Pumps, sensors, expansion vessels, relief valves, mixing valves, insulation and transfer fluid are largely standard components, and treating a whole solar circuit as brand-specific is how a two-day repair becomes a six-week wait for a badged part that was never necessary.
Across the systems we see, failures arrive in a fairly consistent sequence, and knowing it is useful when deciding what to look at first.
Soiling comes first, and it is not a failure at all. Dust settles on the glazing continuously here and rain neither falls often enough nor arrives clean enough to remove it. Output declines gradually with nothing broken, and it is the cheapest thing on the roof to correct. It is also the variable that has to be eliminated before diagnosing anything else, because reading collector performance through a layer of sand is guessing.
Sensors and controller are second on split systems. Both sensors are usually thermistors with a known resistance at a known temperature, which makes them quick to verify with a meter. A collector sensor failed open means the pump never runs and the system stops silently. A collector sensor reading high means the pump runs at night and actively radiates the tank's heat away through the roof, which produces the classic complaint of hot water in the evening and none in the morning.
The transfer fluid is third and it is the one with consequences. Glycol carries an inhibitor package that is consumed by heat, far faster at stagnation temperatures than at operating ones, and this climate produces a great deal of stagnation. Once the inhibitors are gone the fluid darkens, turns acidic and begins attacking the circuit — pump seals harden, corrosion products circulate, and the collector's narrow passages start to block.
The pump is fourth and it is usually a symptom of the third. Small circulation pumps seize after standing in degraded fluid, particularly through a summer when a property was empty. A seized pump can often be freed by hand, which is a diagnosis rather than a repair: it has told you what the fluid did to it and it will seize again.
The cylinder and its element are fifth, and their timing depends on water quality rather than on the roof. Scale accumulates, anodes are consumed, and elements eventually fail — all of which is ordinary cylinder maintenance and is covered the same way as it would be on any conventional installation.
Collectors themselves are last, which is the useful part of the sequence. The glass, frames and absorbers generally outlive several rounds of everything above them.
