AC BTU Calculator for Dubai and the UAE

This tool tells you how much cooling a room needs, measured in BTU. BTU is the number written on every air conditioner, so it is the number you shop with.

It starts with the size of the room, then adds for the things that make a room hotter here: a top floor, a wall of glass, or a west facing window that gets the afternoon sun.

Getting this right matters more in Dubai than almost anywhere. Too small and the unit runs all day and never gets there. Too big and it cools fast, switches off, and leaves the room cold and damp.

What a BTU is

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. It is a measure of heat, and on an air conditioner it means how much heat the unit can take out of a room in an hour.

A 12,000 BTU unit removes 12,000 units of heat per hour. A 24,000 BTU unit removes twice as much.

You will also see tons. One ton of cooling is 12,000 BTU per hour, so a 1.5 ton unit is 18,000 BTU and a 2 ton unit is 24,000 BTU. Shops in the UAE use both words, and they mean the same thing.

The number you want is the amount of heat your room gains in an hour. Match the unit to that and the room stays comfortable without the machine working itself to death.

Why Dubai needs more BTU than most places

Most BTU guides online are written for mild climates. They will tell you to allow around 20 BTU per square foot, which is roughly 215 per square metre. Use that here and you will be cold in January and miserable in August.

Outside air of 45 degrees and higher for months means the difference between outside and inside is enormous, and heat pushes through walls, windows and roofs all day.

Humidity is the second half of it. An air conditioner does not only lower the temperature, it also pulls water out of the air, and that takes energy. Coastal humidity here means a real part of the unit is spent drying rather than cooling.

Sunlight is the third. Strong sun on a wall or through glass adds heat directly into the room, hour after hour.

That is why the starting figures in this tool are much higher than the ones you will find on a European or American site.

What makes one room need more than another

Two rooms of the same size can need very different units. These are the reasons, in order.

  • Which floor it is on

    A top floor room, or one under a flat roof, takes heat from above all day. It can need a quarter more cooling than the same room downstairs.

  • How much glass

    Glass lets heat in far faster than a wall. A room with a full height window is a different problem from one with a small opening.

  • Which way it faces

    West facing rooms get the afternoon sun, which is the hottest part of the day. They are the hardest rooms in any Dubai home to keep cool.

  • How many people

    A body gives off heat all the time. Two people in a bedroom is small. Twelve in a meeting room is not.

  • What is running in it

    A kitchen with an oven, or an office with servers, has a heat source inside the room that never stops.

  • Ceiling height

    A double height living room holds far more air than the floor plan suggests, and all of it has to be cooled.

Bigger is not better

This is the mistake people make when they are not sure. They round up, thinking a larger unit will just cool faster and then relax.

It does cool faster. That is the problem.

An oversized unit pulls the temperature down quickly, hits the set point, and switches off. It has not run long enough to pull much water out of the air, so the room ends up cold and clammy. Then it warms up, and the unit starts again. This is called short cycling.

Short cycling wears out the compressor, which is the expensive part. It also uses more electricity than a right sized unit running steadily, because starting a motor costs far more than keeping it going.

A correctly sized unit runs for long stretches on a hot afternoon. That is what it is supposed to do. If yours never seems to switch off in August, that is often normal rather than a fault.

When to get a real sizing

This calculator gives you a sensible number to shop with and to check a quote against. It is not a design.

For a single bedroom or a normal living room, it will get you close enough that the right unit is obvious.

Get a proper survey when the room is unusual: a double height space, a glass fronted majlis, a shop or a restaurant, or anywhere the whole property is being done at once. A survey looks at insulation, glazing type, shading, orientation and how the space is actually used.

It is also worth a survey if you are replacing a unit that never performed. Fitting the same size again repeats the problem, and the reason it failed may not be the size at all.

Questions people ask

How many BTU do I need for a room in Dubai?

As a starting point, around 600 BTU per square metre for a normal room, more for a top floor or a room with a lot of glass. A 20 square metre bedroom lands near 12,000 to 14,000 BTU.

How many BTU is one ton of AC?

One ton is 12,000 BTU per hour. So 1.5 tons is 18,000 BTU, 2 tons is 24,000 BTU and 2.5 tons is 30,000 BTU.

Is a bigger AC better?

No. An oversized unit cools quickly, switches off before it has removed the humidity, and leaves the room cold and damp. It also wears out the compressor faster and uses more power.

Why do UAE BTU figures look so high?

Because most guides are written for mild climates. Outside temperatures above 45 degrees, high humidity and strong sun all add heat that a European or American calculation never allows for.

Does ceiling height change the BTU?

Yes. Cooling works on the air in the room, and a taller room holds more air. Anything above about 3 metres needs an allowance, and a double height space needs a proper calculation.

Should I add BTU for a top floor apartment?

Yes. Heat comes through the roof all day, so a top floor room commonly needs around a quarter more cooling than the same room on a middle floor.
