Door Lock Repair Dubai

Most locks that feel wrong are not broken. The door has dropped, the latch no longer meets the strike, and the mechanism is being forced every time it is used. Door lock repair Dubai starts by checking the alignment, because replacing a lock that was never the fault fixes nothing.

Overview

Locks that turn, latches that meet, handles that stay on

Entrance doors, internal doors, bathroom privacy sets, sliding doors and gates — diagnosed properly and repaired where repair is the honest answer.

What it covers

Euro cylinders, mortice locks, latches and strikes, handles and spindles, bathroom sets, smart and digital locks, and door closers on entrance doors.

Why alignment first

A dropped door or a moved frame makes a perfectly good lock feel broken. Fitting a new one into the same misalignment reproduces the fault in weeks.

Apartments

Entrance doors are usually fire-rated assemblies, and what may be changed on them is limited. That matters more than most people are told.

Handovers and tenancies

A new tenancy is the moment to change a cylinder, not to wonder how many keys exist. It is a fifteen-minute job on a standard door.

Symptoms

When a lock or handle needs attention

The first four are all the same underlying fault at different stages.

Urgent

The door has to be lifted or pushed to lock

Classic dropped door. The latch or bolt is no longer meeting its keeper, and every lock operation is now forcing the mechanism.

Urgent

The key turns hard, or only sometimes

Either binding from misalignment or a cylinder full of fine dust. One is a hinge job, the other is a clean — and they feel similar in the hand.

Urgent

A handle that has gone loose or droops

Usually the spindle or the fixing screws. Left alone it stops retracting the latch fully, and that is how people get shut in a room.

Emergency

The latch clicks but the door swings open

The latch is not engaging the strike plate at all. The door is unsecured even when it looks shut, which is worse than it feels.

Emergency

A key snapped in the cylinder

Often the end of a long period of stiffness that was ignored. Extraction is usually possible; forcing the remainder rarely helps it.

Urgent

A digital lock draining batteries fast

Common on entrance doors taking direct sun. Heat shortens battery life considerably, and a dead lock with no mechanical override is a locked-out household.

Book soon

Moving into a property

You do not know who holds keys — previous tenants, agents, contractors. Changing the cylinder rather than the whole lock is quick and inexpensive.

Urgent

A bathroom lock that will not release

Privacy sets are lightweight and jam. Every one should have an emergency release on the outside, and it is worth knowing where yours is.

Why TRAXICO

Why choose TRAXICO for door lock repair Dubai

The diagnosis is the work. Anybody can fit a replacement.

Alignment checked first

Hinges, frame and strike position assessed before any part is condemned, because a new lock in a misaligned door fails the same way the old one did.

Repair where repair is honest

A stiff cylinder full of dust is a clean and a lubricant. A dropped door is a hinge adjustment. Neither of those is a reason to sell you a lock.

Sensible security advice

Where a cylinder should be upgraded we will say why in plain terms, and where the existing one is perfectly adequate we will say that too.

Fire doors treated as fire doors

Apartment entrance doors are usually rated assemblies. What can be changed on one is limited, and cutting into it casually is not acceptable.

Keyed alike where it helps

Several doors on one key is straightforward when cylinders are replaced together, and it is much harder to arrange after the fact.

Non-destructive where possible

A locked-out call is opened without damage wherever the lock allows it, so the outcome is entry rather than entry plus a new door.

Scope

What door lock repair Dubai includes

The first two steps decide whether anything needs replacing at all.

  1. 1

    Fault diagnosed on the door

Operated with the door open and closed. A lock that works perfectly with the door open and badly with it shut is an alignment fault, not a lock fault.

  2. 2

    Hinges and frame assessed

Hinge wear, screw fixings into the frame, and whether the door has dropped or the frame has moved. This is where most entrance-door faults actually live.

  3. 3

    Alignment corrected

Hinges tightened or packed, screws reset into sound material, and the strike plate adjusted or repositioned so the latch meets it cleanly.

  4. 4

    Mechanism cleaned and lubricated

Cylinders and latches cleared of the fine dust that gets everywhere here, and lubricated with the right product — not the oil that collects more dust.

  5. 5

    Parts replaced where needed

Cylinder, mortice case, latch, handles or spindle. Measured properly, because a euro cylinder that projects past the handle plate is a security fault in itself.

  6. 6

    Handles and spindles refitted

Loose sets stripped, spindle checked for wear and length, and roses or backplates fixed into sound material rather than into stripped screw holes.

  7. 7

    Keys and access checked

All keys tested in the new mechanism, spares supplied and counted, and keyed-alike arrangements confirmed where several doors were done together.

  8. 8

    Operation demonstrated

Locked and unlocked from both sides, closer adjusted where fitted, and anything left to monitor explained plainly before we leave.

Not covered by this service

Quoted separately, so nothing appears on your invoice unexpectedly.

How It Works

How door lock repair Dubai works, step by step

Usually one visit. The exception is a lock that has to be ordered rather than carried.

  1. 01

    Describe the symptom

What it does, when it started, and whether it is worse when the door is closed. That last detail alone narrows it to alignment or mechanism.

  2. 02

    Photograph the lock

The edge of the door with the latch and any faceplate visible, plus the handles. It tells us what type of lock it is and what to bring.

  3. 03

    Diagnose on site

Operated open and closed, hinges checked, strike inspected for witness marks — the shiny scrape that shows exactly where the latch has been hitting.

  4. 04

    Options explained

Adjust, repair or replace, with the reasoning and what each costs. A lock that can be cleaned and realigned should not be sold as a replacement.

  5. 05

    Work carried out

Alignment corrected first in every case, then any parts changed, so the new component is going into a door that closes properly.

  6. 06

    Keys handed over

Every key tested, spares counted out to you, and old keys returned rather than kept. On a handover, the number of keys in existence is the point.

  7. 07

    Check and advice

Operation shown from both sides, closer adjusted, and any related issue flagged — a sagging hinge on the next door along tends to be the next call.

Benefits

What proper door lock repair Dubai gives you

A door that closes without thought is the entire objective.

A door that is actually secured

A latch that clicks without engaging the strike leaves a door that looks shut and is not. It is the fault people live with longest without realising.

A mechanism that stops wearing out

Correcting alignment removes the force that was destroying the lock. Left as it is, the replacement fails the same way on the same timescale.

Certainty about keys

After a handover or a change of staff, a new cylinder means the keys that exist are the keys you counted, which is not something to assume.

A repair instead of a replacement

Most stiff locks in this city are dust and dryness. A clean and the right lubricant costs a fraction of the lock somebody would rather sell you.

Nobody shut in a bathroom

Privacy sets fail closed, and every one should have a working emergency release outside. Checking that takes seconds and matters a great deal once.

No repeat call-out

Fixing the cause rather than the symptom is why a properly diagnosed door lock job does not come back a month later with the same complaint.

Worth Knowing

What most people get wrong about door lock repair Dubai

The first section is the one worth reading. It explains most of the call-outs on this page.

Most door lock repair Dubai calls are alignment, not locks

This is the single most useful thing on the page, so it goes first. When a door becomes hard to lock, the lock is usually working perfectly.

The test takes ten seconds and anybody can do it. Open the door wide, so the latch and bolt are not touching anything, and operate the lock and the handle. If everything moves freely and smoothly with the door open, and is stiff or impossible with the door closed, the mechanism is fine — the problem is that the parts on the door and the parts on the frame are no longer meeting where they should.

Doors move for ordinary reasons. Hinge screws work loose in the frame over years of use, particularly the top hinge which carries most of the load, and the door drops at the outer edge by a few millimetres. That is enough: the latch now strikes the plate low, the bolt no longer lines up with its keeper, and locking requires lifting the handle or leaning on the door. Frames themselves move too, especially on external openings where heat cycling is severe.

Evidence is easy to find. Look at the strike plate on the frame and you will usually see a bright scraped mark where the latch has been hitting metal instead of entering the hole. Look at the gap along the top of the door: if it is wider at the hinge side than the handle side, the door has dropped. Look at the hinge screws: at least one is usually proud.

What follows is that fitting a new lock into that door changes nothing except the invoice. The new latch hits the same plate in the same wrong place, is forced the same way, and wears out on the same schedule. Anyone who quotes for a replacement lock without opening the door and testing it free has not diagnosed anything.

The actual repair is usually undramatic: tighten or replace the hinge screws into sound material, pack a hinge where it has worn, and adjust or reposition the strike plate so the latch enters cleanly. Where screws have stripped their holes — very common in older timber frames — the fix is to plug and redrill rather than to move to a longer screw, which splits the frame.

Dust, dryness and why door lock repair Dubai looks different here

Locks in this city fail in a specific way, and understanding it saves a lot of unnecessary replacement.

Fine airborne dust is constant, and it is abrasive. It gets into a cylinder every time a key goes in, works down between the pins and the housing, and mixes with whatever lubricant is in there to form a paste. The lock stiffens gradually — first a slight resistance, then having to jiggle the key, then having to be at exactly the right angle, then a snapped key. Nobody calls at stage one, and by stage four the door is an emergency.

The single most common thing that makes it worse is oil. Somebody feels resistance, sprays a general-purpose penetrating oil or a household lubricant into the keyway, and it works beautifully for a fortnight — then it becomes noticeably worse than before, because a wet film in a dusty environment collects more dust than a dry one. Cylinders want a dry lubricant, graphite or a PTFE-based product, precisely because it does not stay tacky.

The right maintenance is unglamorous and effective: clear the keyway with compressed air, apply a dry lubricant, work the key several times, and repeat perhaps annually on an external door. On a door that has already reached the jiggling stage it will often restore normal operation completely, which is why we try it before quoting for a cylinder.

Heat is the second factor and it acts on everything electronic. An entrance door taking direct afternoon sun gets genuinely hot, and the lock body with it. That shortens battery life in digital locks dramatically compared with the manufacturer's figures, degrades adhesives and seals, and in the worst cases affects the electronics themselves. It is worth knowing before choosing a lock for a west-facing villa door.

And a snapped key is the end state of all of this. Extraction is often possible without destroying the cylinder if the break is clean and nobody has forced the remainder further in. Attempting it with pliers and superglue is what turns a recoverable situation into a drilled cylinder.

Euro cylinders and mortice cases: the vocabulary of door lock repair Dubai

A little vocabulary makes the whole subject easier to discuss, and it is worth knowing before somebody quotes you for a part.

The euro-profile cylinder is the pear-shaped barrel that the key goes into, and it is what most doors in Dubai use. It sits inside a lock case in the edge of the door and is held by a single long screw through the faceplate. Crucially, the cylinder is a separate, cheap, replaceable component: changing who can open a door means changing this part alone, not the whole lock. That is why a handover cylinder change is a fifteen-minute job.

The lock case — the mortice — is the box buried in the door edge that contains the latch and the deadbolt. Cases fail less often than cylinders, and when they do it is usually the spring on the latch or a worn follower where the spindle passes through.

The two measurements that matter when replacing a cylinder are its two halves, measured from the centre screw hole outward. A cylinder that is too short will not reach; one that is too long projects beyond the handle plate and can be gripped, which is a security fault in itself. Ideally the cylinder finishes flush or very slightly proud. This is the sort of detail that gets ignored when somebody fits whatever length was in the van.

Two upgrades are worth knowing about. An anti-snap cylinder is designed with a sacrificial section so that if the exposed part is snapped off, the mechanism stays locked rather than opening — it addresses a specific and well-known attack, and it costs little more than a plain one. And a thumbturn cylinder lets the door be opened from inside without a key, which is a real benefit in a fire and a real consideration where there is glazing beside the door that could be broken to reach it. Which of those matters more depends on the door, and it is a conversation rather than a default.

The last vocabulary item is keyed alike: several cylinders supplied to operate on one key. It is simple to arrange when cylinders are being replaced together and awkward afterwards, so it is worth deciding at the point of the work.

Handles and spindles: the door lock repair Dubai that shuts people in

Door handles are simple and their failure mode is worth explaining, because it is the reason for a category of call that people find alarming.

A handle turns a square bar — the spindle — that passes through the lock case and retracts the latch. The handle is held to the door by a rose or a backplate, screwed through the door or into it. There are only really three things that go wrong: the fixing screws loosen, the spindle wears or is the wrong length, or the return spring in the handle or the lock case weakens.

The progression is consistent. First the handle feels loose and rattles. Then it starts to droop rather than returning level. Then it has to be pushed down further than it used to in order to open the door. Then, one day, it turns and the latch does not retract, and somebody is on the wrong side of a closed door. In a bathroom or a bedroom with a child inside, that is a genuinely unpleasant few minutes.

Every stage of that is fixable in about the same amount of time as the last, so the advice is simply not to live with a loose handle. Tightening the fixings early, replacing a worn spindle, or fitting a handle set with a sprung rose that supports the weight of the lever prevents the whole sequence.

A specific and common Dubai variant: internal doors in many apartments are hollow-core, and handle fixings into them rely on the timber lock block inside the door edge. Once those screws have stripped that block, tightening does nothing and the correct repair is to plug the holes properly rather than to move to a longer screw that will split it.

Bathroom privacy sets are a category of their own. They are usually lightweight, they jam more often than any other lock in a home, and every one has — or should have — an emergency release on the outside, either a coin slot or a small hole for a release pin. It is worth finding yours before you need it. When a set is being replaced, that release is not an optional feature.

Smart locks: what they solve and what they add

Digital and smart locks are now routine on villa entrance doors and holiday-let apartments here, and they are genuinely useful for a specific set of problems. They also introduce failure modes that a mechanical lock does not have, and an honest account covers both.

What they solve is access management. Codes rather than keys mean no key handover for cleaners, maintenance or guests, and a code can be changed in seconds when somebody no longer needs it. For a property that is let short term, that is not a convenience, it is the whole operating model. Audit trails and remote unlocking are real benefits for anyone managing a property they do not live in.

What they add, in this climate, is heat and batteries. An entrance door in afternoon sun gets hot, and battery performance degrades with temperature, so the manufacturer's stated battery life is optimistic on a west-facing door. Batteries also give warning that is easy to ignore. The practical requirement is therefore a mechanical override — a physical key cylinder as a backup — and knowing where that key is kept. A smart lock with no mechanical override on a hot door is a locked-out household waiting for a flat battery.

Installation is where the other consideration sits. Many smart locks are designed for a standard door thickness and a particular lock case, and fitting one to a heavy developer-supplied entrance door sometimes means additional machining. On a fire-rated apartment door, that is where it stops being a straightforward swap — see below.

Where a lock is wired rather than battery-powered, or where a video doorbell and an intercom are part of the same project, that becomes electrical work rather than lock work, and electrical repair Dubai is the right starting point for the supply side of it.

The recommendation we usually give is unexciting: a good mechanical lock on the entrance for security, with a smart lock chosen for access management if that problem actually exists in your household. If nobody but the family ever needs to get in, a smart lock is solving a problem you do not have.

Fire doors, apartment entrances and what may not be changed

This section applies to almost every apartment in Dubai and it is routinely ignored, so it is worth being direct about it.

The entrance door to an apartment is normally a fire-rated assembly. That rating belongs to the whole assembly — leaf, frame, hinges, intumescent seals and the ironmongery — tested together, not to the door leaf alone. It exists because the corridor outside is an escape route, and the door's job in a fire is to hold the fire inside the flat for a defined period while people leave.

Two consequences follow. Cutting new apertures into such a door, enlarging a lock case pocket, or fitting ironmongery not suited to a rated door compromises that assembly. And removing or wedging the door closer, which people do because a self-closing entrance door is annoying, defeats it entirely — a fire door that is not closed is not a fire door.

That does not mean nothing can be done. Replacing a euro cylinder like for like is normal and does not affect the rating. Repairing hinges and adjusting a closer maintains it. Replacing a handle set with an equivalent rated one is fine. What needs care is anything that removes material from the leaf or changes the type of lock, and on a building-supplied door, the building may have its own requirements about it.

Building management is worth a call before changing anything substantial on an apartment entrance door, both because they may have a specification and because in some towers the door and its ironmongery are the building's responsibility rather than the occupier's — which occasionally means somebody else pays for the repair you were about to arrange.

The related item nobody thinks about is the closer. A door closer on an entrance door is a safety component and it is also the thing that makes a door slam or fail to latch. Adjusting the closing and latching speeds properly takes a few minutes and solves a surprising number of complaints about the lock.

Lockouts, handovers and who else holds a key

Two situations bring most people to this page, and they deserve practical answers rather than a sales pitch.

The first is being locked out. The important thing to know is that a competent approach is non-destructive wherever the lock allows it, and that outcome depends on what you do before help arrives. Do not attempt to force the door — damage to the frame turns a lock job into joinery. Do not push a broken key further in. If a key has been left in the inside of a cylinder, say so when you call, because that changes the method entirely. And be ready to establish that the property is yours; any responsible provider will ask, and one that does not is a reason for concern.

Where a lock genuinely has to be drilled, the cylinder is destroyed and replaced and the rest of the lock and the door survive. That is a normal outcome on some high-security cylinders and it is not a failure — it is the design working.

The second situation is a handover. Moving into a property in Dubai, you have no reliable way of knowing how many keys exist or who holds them: previous tenants, their family, cleaners, agents, contractors during the vacancy. Changing the cylinder is not a security upgrade so much as a reset — the keys that exist afterwards are the keys that were handed to you. On a standard euro cylinder it is quick and inexpensive, and it is the one piece of moving-in advice that costs almost nothing and is unambiguously worth taking.

The same logic applies to a business changing staff, or a landlord between tenancies. And where several doors are involved — an entrance, a store, a roof access — replacing the cylinders together allows them to be keyed alike, which is much simpler to arrange at that moment than later.

A final note on spares: count the keys you are given, and keep one somewhere that is not inside the property. Half of the lockout calls anybody attends are a single-key household.

What moves the price

Whether it is the lock at all
An alignment fault is a hinge and strike adjustment. Replacing a lock that was never faulty costs more and reproduces the same symptom within weeks.
The type of lock fitted
A standard euro cylinder is a stocked part. A proprietary multipoint mechanism on a sliding or aluminium door may have to be ordered to the profile.
How many doors
Several cylinders changed in one visit costs less per door and allows them to be keyed alike, which is far simpler than arranging it afterwards.
Fire-rated assemblies
An apartment entrance door limits what may be changed. Like-for-like work is normal; anything that machines the leaf needs the rating considered first.
Damage already done
A forced door, a split frame or a stripped lock block is joinery on top of lock work, and it is why forcing a stuck door is worth avoiding.

No surprises on the invoice

Before booking anything, open the door wide and operate the lock. If it works perfectly with the door open, tell us that — it means you almost certainly need an adjustment rather than a lock, and we would rather that were established on the phone.
