Symptoms
The first three are the ones where doing it yourself tends to cost more than the assembly would have.

How It Works
Most of this is scheduling. The build is the predictable part.
Item names or model numbers and how many. A photograph of the boxes stacked in the room tells us the volume better than a list does.
Assembly after delivery, not alongside it. In towers this means checking the service lift booking, which is the thing most likely to move the day.
Where each piece goes, what has to move first, and whether anything built will still fit through the door. Ten minutes that occasionally saves the whole job.
Parts counted against the list and inspected for transit damage before assembly starts, so a claim can be raised while the packaging still exists.
Largest and most awkward first while the room is empty, working towards the smaller items. Beds before bedside units, wardrobes before what sits beside them.
Levelling, hinge and runner adjustment, sliding door alignment and wall restraints — the finishing pass that separates built from finished.

A square, levelled carcass keeps its geometry. Almost every complaint about flat-pack doors dropping is a carcass problem, not a hinge problem.
Anchoring tall units is a five-minute step that removes the one real physical hazard in a furnished bedroom, particularly with children in the home.
The alternative is living around boxes for a fortnight. A team building in sequence turns a weekend of frustration into an afternoon.
Particleboard is unforgiving and stripped joints cannot be undone. Hand-tightened fittings are the difference between furniture and a warranty argument.
Packaging removed rather than stacked in a corner, floors clean, and the pieces where they are staying rather than where they were built.
Built with the fittings intact and the spares kept, a piece survives a future disassembly. Built badly, it does not come apart twice.
Worth Knowing
Flat-pack has a small number of irreversible steps. Almost everything that goes wrong is one of them, taken in the wrong order.
Everything that goes wrong with a flat-pack wardrobe six months later was decided in about ninety seconds during the build, at the point the back panel went on.
A carcass is four panels held in tension. Until the back is fixed, it is a parallelogram — it can rack a few millimetres in either direction and nothing resists it. The thin hardboard back, pinned or screwed all round, is what turns it into a rigid box. Whatever shape the carcass is in at that moment is the shape it keeps.
The check takes seconds. Measure the two diagonals across the open face of the carcass; if they are equal, it is square. If they differ by five millimetres, that difference is now permanent, and it is the reason a door has a wedge-shaped gap down one side or a sliding door touches at the top and not at the bottom.
People then attack the symptom. Hinges have adjustment in three axes and it is tempting to dial the gap out. It works up to a point and it moves the problem — the door ends up sitting proud, or the closing edge rubs. Sliding doors have less adjustment and show a racked carcass much sooner, which is why sliding-door wardrobes are the item we are most often called to after a self-build.
The second half of the same problem is the floor. Dubai floors, tiled and screeded, are frequently a few millimetres out over the width of a wardrobe. Standing a square carcass on an unlevel floor twists it back out of square, slowly, under its own weight and its load. Adjustable feet exist for this and they get ignored because the unit looks fine on the day.
None of this is skilled work. It is knowing which two steps cannot be revisited, and spending an extra two minutes on each.
In every wardrobe, bookcase and tall chest pack there is a small bag with a strap or an L-bracket and two screws. It is the most important component in the box and it is the one most often left in the bag.
The physics are simple and unpleasant. A tall unit has its mass high and its base narrow. Pull the top drawer out fully and the centre of gravity moves forward beyond the front edge of the base. Load that drawer, or have a child hang on it or climb the front like a ladder, and the unit goes over. It does not tip slowly. Furniture tip-overs are a recognised cause of serious injury to small children worldwide, and the restraint in that bag is the entire mitigation.
What makes it a job worth doing properly rather than quickly is the wall. The strap is only as good as what the screw goes into. In a gypsum partition, a plastic plug in the board is not a restraint — it will pull straight out under exactly the load it exists to resist. It needs the stud, or a proper cavity anchor rated for the pull. In hollow blockwork, the plug needs to reach something solid or be a fixing designed for the void. This is the same anchoring question that decides TV mounting Dubai, and it has the same answer: identify the wall first.
Two practical notes. Anchor after the unit is in its final position and levelled, not before, or the strap ends up under tension or slack. And when furniture is moved during redecorating, the strap comes off and is very often never refitted — which is how a unit that was safe for three years stops being.
It costs five minutes per item. We fit them as standard rather than as an upsell, and we would rather have the argument about it than leave a loaded chest of drawers free-standing in a child's bedroom.
Understanding what the fittings actually do explains most of the rules about handling flat-pack, and it takes a paragraph.
The joint in nearly all modern flat-pack is a cam and a bolt. A threaded bolt screws into a plastic or metal insert in the edge of one panel, its head passes through a hole in the face of the other, and a round cam housed in a drilled recess rotates a half-turn to catch the head and pull the joint tight. Wooden dowels either side stop the joint rotating. It is fast, it is strong in the direction it is designed for, and it depends entirely on the board around it staying intact.
That board is particleboard: wood chips and resin, faced with a thin melamine or foil layer. It has decent compressive strength and very little resistance to a thread being over-torqued in it. Once a bolt insert spins in its hole, or a cam recess crumbles, the joint cannot be re-tightened. Wood glue and a dowel can sometimes rescue it, but the panel is compromised from then on.
Two consequences follow. The first is that a power driver on full torque is the wrong tool for the last turn of anything. Fittings are brought together with a driver and finished by hand, and "tight" means the joint is closed, not that the tool has stopped.
The second is more important and less known: every disassembly costs something. Each time a cam is released and re-seated, the recess wears; each time a bolt is wound out of its insert, the thread loses a little. Flat-pack furniture will typically survive being taken apart and rebuilt once, often twice, and rarely three times. That is not a manufacturing fault, it is what the joint is.
So the calculation when moving home is genuinely a calculation. A wardrobe that has already been moved once may be worth taking apart carefully, and it may be worth leaving. What is never worth doing is dragging an assembled carcass through a doorway to avoid disassembly — that racks the joints in a way that is far worse than a controlled strip-down.
The logistics around an apartment build cause more failed appointments than the furniture ever does.
Service lift bookings come first. Most towers require the lift to be booked for deliveries and for contractor work, restrict the hours, and issue a slot rather than a window. A delivery that misses its slot may wait until the next day. Booking assembly for the same hours as the delivery is a common and expensive mistake — the boxes have to be in the flat before anybody can start on them.
Doorways come second and are the one that occasionally cannot be fixed. A built wardrobe carcass is rigid and its assembled depth and width do not negotiate with a door frame or a corridor turn. The rule is to build in the room the piece is staying in, and where that is not possible, to check the assembled dimensions against every doorway and turn on the route before the first panel comes out of its box. This applies most to wardrobes, storage walls and large desks, and it is why we walk the route first.
Working hours are third. Many buildings prohibit noisy work at certain times and on Fridays, and a mallet on a dowel counts as noisy. For occupied offices this pushes the work out of hours, which is fine when it is planned and disruptive when it is discovered on the day.
And the packaging is the fourth. A three-bedroom flat-pack delivery produces an extraordinary volume of cardboard and polystyrene, and most buildings will not accept it in the domestic waste. It has to leave the building rather than move to a corner of the guest room. We remove it, and it is worth confirming that with anyone else you use, because being left with it is the standard outcome.
Not all flat-pack presents the same problem, and the failure modes are specific enough to be worth knowing.
Beds fail at the slats and the centre rail. A double or larger frame needs a centre support with a leg to the floor, and it is the part most often left out because the bed feels solid without it. It is not — the load path from the middle of the mattress has nowhere to go, and slats bow, crack and eventually drop. Slat spacing matters too, particularly with foam mattresses, which need closer support than sprung ones. And bed frames loosen with use in a way other furniture does not, so the fixings are worth checking once a year rather than never.
Wardrobes fail at square and at the doors, as above, with sliding doors the least forgiving version. They also have the highest anchoring requirement of anything in a bedroom, and they are the piece most likely not to fit through the door once built.
Chests and drawer units fail at the runners and at the tipping point. Cheap runners are set by the screw positions rather than adjusted, so building them without checking that the drawer front lines up before the next one goes in tends to leave a stepped set of fronts nobody can fix later without pulling it apart.
Desks and workstations fail at rigidity. A desk with an open frame relies on its bracing, and the diagonal brace or the modesty panel is the part that people leave off because the desk stands up without it. It stands up and it wobbles, and a wobbling desk gets tightened repeatedly until the fittings strip.
Office furniture in quantity has an extra dimension, which is consistency: twenty workstations built by different hands to different tightness will not sit at the same height or line up along a bank. Where a fit-out is happening around it, coordinating with the office cleaning Dubai team after the build means the packaging dust does not end up in everything on the first working day.
There is a category of problem that is not an assembly problem, and being clear about it saves a wasted visit.
Missing hardware is common. Packs are made up in volume and a bag of cams or a pack of dowels goes astray often enough that any assembler carries generic replacements for the standard sizes. Where a proprietary fitting is missing — a specific bracket, a branded connector, a drilled part — it has to come from the retailer, and no amount of improvisation is an acceptable substitute in a load-bearing joint. Checking the parts against the list before starting is what turns this from a lost day into a phone call made early.
Transit damage is the other one. A cracked corner, a chipped edge or a bowed panel is a claim against the retailer or the carrier, and claims are far easier while the packaging is still there and the piece is not built. This is exactly why the inspection happens before assembly rather than at the point the damaged panel needs to go in.
What cannot be repaired is a stripped joint in particleboard, a split panel, or a carcass that has been forced together out of square and then loaded. Those are replacement panels, ordered from the manufacturer, and any assembler telling you otherwise is proposing a repair that will fail again.
Built-in and made-to-measure joinery is a different trade altogether, not a harder version of this one. Where a wardrobe has to fit an alcove exactly, or a run of units has to follow a wall that is not straight, that is carpentry — cut, scribed and fixed on site — and it is worth being told that plainly rather than being sold flat-pack fudged into an opening it does not suit.
And where furniture is being assembled as part of a wider move, the sequencing matters more than the assembly: painting first, then flooring, then furniture. Building bedroom units and then discovering the room is being repainted means everything moves twice. If interior painting Dubai is on the list, do that before the boxes are opened.
Particleboard and MDF are more sensitive to their environment than solid timber, and Dubai gives them a specific set of conditions.
The risk is not the heat directly, it is moisture. Particleboard swells irreversibly when it takes on water — an edge that gets wet lifts and stays lifted, because the chips absorb and the resin does not let them dry back to shape. The melamine facing protects the faces well and the cut edges hardly at all, which is why the vulnerable places are the underside of a bathroom vanity, the back edge of a unit against an outside wall, and the base of a wardrobe standing where an air conditioner drains or a cleaner mops.
Humidity is the version of this that catches people out in an empty property. A flat left shut up over summer with the air conditioning off reaches high internal humidity, and furniture in it takes on moisture through every cut edge. Doors bind, drawers stiffen and edging lifts. The remedy is prosaic: leave the air conditioning running at a modest setpoint rather than off entirely when a property is unoccupied.
The second environmental factor is sunlight. Direct sun through unshaded glazing fades melamine and veneer unevenly, so a wardrobe front by a window develops a colour difference along its length. It also warms panels enough that a door can move measurably between morning and evening, which is worth knowing before adjusting hinges to chase a gap that will not stay where it is put.
Neither is a reason to buy differently. Both are reasons to place furniture with a thought for where the sun and the water are, to keep cut edges off wet floors, and to accept that flat-pack in this climate has a life measured in years rather than decades. That is a fair trade at the price, provided nobody is expecting otherwise.
