Symptoms
Some of these have filtration answers. One or two have plumbing answers instead, and it is worth knowing which.

Hardness minerals. A drinking filter will not change this — it needs a softener or a scale inhibitor on the whole supply.

A filter is only as good as its last change. Yours goes on a schedule with reminders, because the interval is the service and the install is not.

Over a year the arithmetic usually works comfortably, provided cartridges get changed. A neglected system removes the saving and the benefit together.

Worth Knowing
There is more selling than information in this market, so this section is written to be useful even if you buy from somebody else.
Dubai's supply is largely desalinated seawater, blended and treated, and it leaves the production plant meeting drinking water standards. That is worth stating plainly, because a great deal of filter marketing here rests on the implication that it does not.
What people are usually reacting to happens after that. Water travels through the distribution network, and in most buildings it is then stored in a tank on the property before reaching your tap. Storage tanks accumulate sediment, and if they are not cleaned on a schedule, that is where taste, odour and visible particles come from. Riser pipework contributes as well, particularly in older buildings.
The single most common complaint is chlorine taste. Residual disinfectant is deliberately maintained through the network for safety, and it is doing something useful — but it is detectable, and it is unpleasant to a lot of people. A carbon filter removes it easily, and for many households that alone is the entire reason they wanted a filter.
The practical consequence is that if your water tastes bad or looks unclear, the first question is when your building tank was last cleaned. On a villa with its own tank that is directly within your control, and it is often more relevant than any filter. Filtering water that comes from a dirty tank treats a symptom you can address at the source.
If somebody has come to your door with a small meter, dipped it in a glass of your tap water, shown you a number, then dipped it in their filtered sample and shown you a much lower one, this section is for you.
TDS means total dissolved solids. The meter measures electrical conductivity and converts it to an approximate figure for how much dissolved material is in the water. That is all it does.
It does not distinguish between substances. Calcium and magnesium — ordinary minerals, harmless and arguably beneficial — raise the reading exactly as anything else would. A high TDS reading therefore tells you nothing whatsoever about whether water is safe, and a low one tells you nothing about whether it is clean. Distilled water reads near zero and so does water that has had something genuinely harmful dissolved in it in small quantity.
There is also a version of the demonstration using an electrolysis device, which is dropped into tap water and produces alarming brown flocculation within a minute. That reaction comes from the iron electrode in the device corroding, and it happens in any water containing dissolved minerals. It is theatre.
None of this means filtration is pointless. It means that a TDS number is not a reason to buy one, and anybody using it as the basis of a sale is either untrained or relying on you not knowing. A real assessment measures specific things — hardness, chlorine, turbidity — and explains what each one means for you.
Multi-stage filtration typically means a sediment cartridge that catches particles, followed by one or more carbon stages that adsorb chlorine and the compounds causing taste and odour. It is simple, it wastes no water, it maintains flow, and for the overwhelming majority of households asking for better tasting drinking water, it is the correct answer.
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane that rejects the great majority of dissolved solids, including minerals. It produces very pure water. It also has three characteristics worth knowing before choosing it: it produces reject water that goes to drain, at a ratio that varies by system and pressure; it is slow, so it needs a storage tank under the sink; and it needs a minimum working pressure to function at all, which not every apartment has.
RO also removes the minerals along with everything else, which is why better systems include a remineralisation stage afterwards. Without one, the water can taste flat, and there is a reasonable argument that removing dietary minerals from drinking water is not automatically an improvement.
The honest guidance is that RO is genuinely the right choice for specific circumstances — very high hardness where you want mineral-free water for a particular use, or a supply with a known problem RO addresses. For "I want the chlorine taste gone", multi-stage carbon filtration does the job, costs less to buy and run, wastes nothing and takes up less space.
This gets conflated constantly and the two are not alternatives.
A point-of-use system under the kitchen sink treats the water you drink and cook with. It does not touch the water going to your showers, your washing machine, your water heater or your dishwasher, and it is not intended to.
A whole-house system sits where the supply enters the property — after the tank on a villa — and treats everything. That is what you need if the objective is protecting equipment from sediment, reducing scale on heating elements and shower fittings, or removing chlorine from bathing water.
So the question that decides it is what you are actually trying to change. Better drinking water: point-of-use. Scale on the kettle, the shower screen and the water heater: whole-house, and specifically a softener or scale inhibitor rather than a filter. Fine sediment appearing at aerators throughout the property: whole-house sediment filtration, plus dealing with the tank it is coming from.
Many villas benefit from both, and the sensible order is whole-house sediment first — because it also extends the life of every cartridge downstream of it, including the drinking system.
A water filter is not an appliance you install and own. It is a consumable in a housing, and the value it delivers is entirely a function of whether that consumable gets replaced.
Carbon works by adsorption — contaminants bind to an enormous internal surface area until that surface is occupied. Once it is saturated, the cartridge stops removing anything and water passes through unchanged. There is no warning. Nothing looks different, nothing tastes different immediately, and flow is unaffected.
Worse, a saturated carbon block is a warm, wet, nutrient-rich environment with a very large surface area, which is a description of an excellent place for bacteria to grow. A filter well past its interval can therefore leave water in worse condition than the supply feeding it. That is not a marketing line to sell servicing — it is the reason every manufacturer specifies a maximum life in months regardless of volume.
Sediment cartridges are more honest about it, because as they load up the flow drops noticeably. Carbon gives you nothing.
The practical answer is dated labels on the housings and a reminder that reaches somebody. We date every cartridge at installation and schedule the change, because a filter nobody services is worse than no filter at all — and the industry's dirty secret is how many installed systems are years past interval.
Most filter problems we are called to are installation rather than product, and they are the same few things every time.
No isolation valve on the feed, so changing a cartridge means shutting off the property, which means it gets postponed. Tubing routed where a drawer runner catches it, which eventually cuts through. Push-fit connections not fully seated — they hold for weeks and then release, into a cabinet, at mains pressure. A unit mounted where the housings cannot actually be unscrewed without removing it entirely, which again means service gets postponed.
On RO systems there are two more. The drain saddle has to be fitted above the trap and correctly, or waste can siphon back toward the unit. And the storage tank has to have space, be supported, and have a working air charge — a tank that has lost its charge delivers a trickle and gets diagnosed as a failed membrane.
None of this is difficult. All of it is skipped by people installing filters quickly, and the consequences turn up months later as a soaked cabinet or a system that nobody has serviced because servicing it is awkward.
The test of a good installation is whether you could change the cartridges yourself in ten minutes without turning off the property. If you could not, it was fitted for speed rather than for its life.
Scale is the second most common complaint after taste, and it is worth being clear that a drinking water filter does nothing about it.
Scale is calcium and magnesium coming out of solution when water is heated or evaporates. It builds on kettle elements, water heater elements, washing machine components, shower screens and taps. A cartridge under the kitchen sink treats one tap and cannot affect any of that.
The real options are a softener, which exchanges hardness minerals for sodium and genuinely prevents scale but needs salt, regeneration and a drain; or a scale inhibitor, which does not remove anything but conditions the minerals so they are less inclined to deposit. Inhibitors are simpler, need no drain or salt, and are less effective than softening — for many Dubai properties they are the reasonable middle option.
What matters is that both go on the incoming supply, not under the sink. If somebody is selling you an under-sink system to solve scale on your shower screen, they are selling you the wrong thing.
And on a tank-fed villa, before spending anything on scale treatment, it is worth having the tank cleaned and the water tested — the actual hardness at your tap is what should decide it, and water tank cleaning is frequently the cheaper first move.
