How do I calculate paint quantity?
- Multiply the area by the number of coats, then divide by the coverage printed on the tin. Add about ten per cent for waste and round up to whole tins.
How many square metres does a gallon of paint cover?
- A 3.6 litre gallon at 11 square metres per litre covers about 40 square metres in one coat, so about 20 square metres in two coats.
How much paint for 100 square metres?
- Two coats at 11 square metres per litre needs about 18 litres, plus waste. That is one 18 litre drum and a small tin, or five gallons.
Should I round up or down?
- Always up. Running out halfway across a wall means a visible join, and a new tin may not match exactly. Extra paint is cheap next to redoing a wall.
Does the waste allowance really matter?
- Yes. Paint stays in the tray, on the roller, on the brush and on the stirring stick. Ten per cent is normal and twenty per cent is right for rough walls.
Is a drum cheaper than gallons?
- Per litre, almost always. But only buy one if you will actually use most of it. Half a drum stored for two years is money spent, not money saved.
