Water Tank Size Calculator

Includes everything: bathing, laundry, kitchen and cleaning.

A tank is never filled to the very top.

Your answer

Tank size to fit

2,000 litres

That is about 440 imperial gallons.

Household uses a day
800 L
Water for the reserve
1600 L
With spare capacity
1920 L
Days before it empties
2.5 days
In gallons
440 gal

A tank should never be so large that water sits in it for a week. Storage that turns over slowly goes stale and grows things.

Water Tank Size Calculator for Dubai and the UAE

This tool works out how big a water tank a home needs. You put in how many people live there and how many days of water you want held in reserve.

The reserve is the part that matters. A tank is not just storage, it is what keeps the taps running when the supply stops or a delivery is late.

The answer comes in litres and in imperial gallons, because tanks in the UAE are sold in both.

How much water a household actually uses

A flat with two people uses very little. A villa with a family, a garden and a pool uses several times as much, and the difference is almost never the people.

Inside the home, the big users are showers, the washing machine and the toilets. A long shower can be sixty litres or more on its own.

Outside, a garden changes everything. Irrigation in a UAE summer uses far more than the household does, and a pool loses water to evaporation every single day it is uncovered.

The figures in the tool are per person totals that include the normal household uses. Pick the one that matches how the property is actually lived in, not how it looks on paper.

Why reserve is the real question

A tank is not a shopping list, it is insurance.

The supply to a building can stop for maintenance, for a burst main, or because a booster pump has failed. A villa on a tanker supply depends on a delivery arriving.

With one day of reserve, any of those becomes an immediate problem. With two or three days, it becomes something you notice and arrange around.

Two days is the normal answer for a home in a serviced area. Three to five is sensible where supply is less reliable, or where a tanker delivery is what fills the tank.

The exception is a flat in a tower, where the building holds the storage and you have none of your own. There the reserve is the building manager problem, not yours.

Bigger is not automatically better

It is tempting to fit the largest tank that fits and never think about water again. That causes its own problem.

Water that sits still goes stale. Chlorine put in by the supplier fades over days, and once it is gone there is nothing stopping bacteria growing.

In UAE heat this is worse than in a cool climate. A tank on a roof or in an unshaded yard warms up through the day, and warm still water is exactly what things grow in.

So a tank should be sized to turn over. If your household uses 800 litres a day, a 2,000 litre tank empties and refills every two or three days and stays fresh. A 10,000 litre tank would hold water for nearly two weeks.

If you genuinely need a large reserve, two smaller tanks plumbed in series is better than one huge one, because the water moves through rather than sitting.

Where the tank goes

Position affects temperature, pressure and how easy it is to look after.

  • On the roof

Gives you gravity pressure and is out of the way. It also gets full sun, so shading or an insulated tank matters here.

  • On the ground

Easier to reach and to clean, and stays cooler. Needs a pump to get water up the building.

  • Ground plus roof

Common in villas. A ground tank stores, a transfer pump fills a roof tank, and the roof tank feeds the house.

  • Underground

Coolest option and invisible. Harder to inspect, and any leak is hidden until the bill or the ground tells you.

  • In a plant room

Best of all for temperature and access, if the space exists. Make sure there is a drain nearby.

Looking after a tank in this climate

A tank is the one part of the water system nobody looks at until the water tastes wrong.

  • Keep it covered and sealed

A loose lid lets in dust, insects and light. Light is what lets algae grow.

  • Keep it out of the sun

A shaded or insulated tank stays far cooler. Warm water is the single biggest factor in a tank going bad.

  • Clean it on a schedule

Sediment settles at the bottom over time. Cleaning is a defined job with its own equipment, not something to do with a bucket.

  • Fit a low level cut out

It protects the pump. A pump that runs dry destroys its own seal in seconds.

  • Check the overflow

A failed float valve with a blocked overflow floods whatever is below the tank.

  • Deal with taste and cloudiness at the source

If the water is off, clean the tank before buying a filter. A filter fitted after a dirty tank blocks within weeks.

Questions people ask

What size water tank do I need for a villa in Dubai?

A family of four using around 300 litres each a day, with two days of reserve, needs roughly 2,400 litres plus spare capacity. Put your own numbers in above.

How much water does a person use a day in the UAE?

Around 150 to 200 litres in a flat, and considerably more in a villa with a garden or a pool. Irrigation and evaporation usually outweigh the household use.

Can a water tank be too big?

Yes. Water that sits for a week goes stale, and in this heat a warm tank grows things. Size it so it turns over every two or three days.

How often should a water tank be cleaned?

On a regular schedule rather than when something goes wrong. Sediment settles slowly and you will not see it from the outside until the water carries it to a tap.

Roof tank or ground tank?

A roof tank gives gravity pressure but bakes in the sun. A ground tank stays cooler and is easier to clean but needs a pump. Many villas use both.

Why does my tank water smell?

Usually warm, still water with no chlorine left in it, or dust and light getting in past a poor lid. Clean the tank, seal it properly and shade it, in that order.
