Worth Knowing
The first section is the reason most people are reading this page, even if it is not what they searched for.
Behind furniture in a great many properties there is a four-way adaptor with another four-way adaptor plugged into it, and between them a television, a router, a games console, a couple of chargers and a lamp.
Every one of those appliances is drawing its current through a single plug and a single socket. The plug has one fuse, the socket has one set of contacts, and the flexible cable of that extension lead has one rating — often modest, particularly on the thin cables sold with cheap multi-way adaptors.
The important part is what the distribution board makes of this. Nothing. The total current might be perfectly within what the circuit is rated for, so no breaker sees anything unusual and no RCD is involved. The overload, if there is one, is entirely local: at the plug, at the socket contacts, and along that thin flexible cable.
What happens next is the sequence that appears throughout this trade. Resistance at a hard-working contact produces heat, heat degrades the contact, the resistance rises, and it accelerates. The socket becomes warm. Then the plug discolours. Then the faceplate browns. And the reason nobody acts is that everything continues to work perfectly the entire time.
This is why an additional socket is a safety improvement rather than a convenience. It is also why the honest first question is not where you want the socket but what you are currently plugging in — because if the answer is a heater and a kettle on one chain, the outlet is not the whole conversation.
People reasonably assume there is a maximum number of sockets per circuit. There is not, in any simple sense, and the reason is worth understanding because it explains why the answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no.
What matters is load, not outlet count. A circuit is protected by a device sized for its cable, and what determines whether it copes is the total current actually drawn at once. Twenty sockets in bedrooms feeding lamps and chargers may draw less than four in a kitchen feeding a kettle, a microwave and a toaster.
So adding a socket to a lightly loaded circuit is usually fine, and adding one to a kitchen circuit that already trips occasionally is not — and the difference cannot be judged by counting outlets. It is judged by looking at what is on the circuit and what the new outlet is for.
The other consideration is diversity — the reasonable assumption that not everything runs at once. That assumption holds for a bedroom and breaks down for a home office where four monitors, a printer and a heater genuinely do run together on a winter afternoon.

Most decisions about socket positions are a matter of convenience. In bathrooms and outdoors they are not, and the constraints exist for reasons that are easy to see once stated.
A bathroom is a room containing water, bare skin and often a wet floor — the three conditions that turn a survivable shock into a serious one. Standard socket outlets are therefore not permitted in the zones close to a bath or shower, and where power is provided it is through appropriate equipment at appropriate distances, with RCD protection.
Outdoors the issue is water ingress rather than the person. An indoor socket in a weatherproof-looking enclosure is not an outdoor socket, and Dubai makes this worse than a mild climate would: irrigation soaks fittings daily, UV hardens gaskets over a couple of summers so seals that were fine stop sealing, and near the coast salt corrodes the housings and fixings.
What happens when this is got wrong is predictable. Water gets in, leakage to earth develops, and the RCD starts tripping — typically after rain or after the garden is watered, which is a useful diagnostic clue. Until it trips, the outlet is a shock risk that nobody is aware of.
The fix is a properly IP-rated enclosure, correctly glanded so cable entry does not become the leak path, mounted clear of standing water and out of the direct line of irrigation. It costs slightly more than the wrong thing and it lasts years rather than one season.
It looks cosmetic and it is not. A faceplate standing proud of the wall, or one that sits at a slight angle, almost always means the back box was set wrong — and the consequence is inside the box rather than on the surface.
Accessories need a certain depth behind them for the cable to fold without being crushed or over-bent. A shallow box, or one that has been pushed too deep and packed out, forces conductors into a space they do not fit. Insulation gets pinched against the box edge. Terminations come under strain because the cable is trying to push the accessory back out. Over time that strain works terminals loose, which is where the heat starts.
Modern accessories — USB sockets, smart outlets, anything with electronics behind the faceplate — need more depth than a plain socket, and fitting one into an existing shallow box is a common cause of exactly this. It is worth mentioning when you ask for USB outlets in place of existing sockets, because it sometimes means enlarging the recess rather than a straight swap.
The other thing a proud faceplate causes is a gap between the plate and the wall, which is where dust collects and, in a kitchen, grease. Neither is dangerous and both look poor.
A socket should sit flat, square and firm against the wall, with the plate screws not overtightened to pull it there. If it does not, something behind it is wrong.
Position is the thing people regret and it costs nothing to get right if it is decided before the chasing starts.
The recurring mistakes are consistent. Sockets behind a sofa or bed that was always going there, reachable only by moving furniture. Kitchen outlets set at a height where a kettle lead has to arch over a worktop. A television wall with power in one place and no provision for the equipment shelf below it. Desk positions that assume a desk against a different wall from the one it ended up on.
The general principles are simple: put outlets where things will actually be plugged in rather than where the chase is short, allow more than you think at a desk or a media wall, and above worktops keep them clear of the sink and hob at a height where a plug does not foul anything.
Height also matters for accessibility. Very low sockets are awkward for anybody who does not bend easily, and in a property that may be occupied by older residents, setting them a little higher than the traditional skirting-level position is a small thing that makes daily life easier.
The practical step is marking positions on the wall and looking at them before anything is cut. It takes five minutes, it is entirely free, and it prevents the one thing about this job that cannot be undone cheaply.
Both are worth having and both have a practical consideration that gets discovered late.
USB outlets replace the plug-in adaptor and free the socket, which in a bedroom or a kitchen is genuinely useful. Two things to know: they need more depth behind them than a plain socket, so a shallow existing box may need enlarging, and the charging electronics inside have a service life of their own — they are the part that will fail, and when they do the whole accessory is replaced rather than repaired.
Smart sockets add remote switching and scheduling. The considerations are depth again, whether the device needs a neutral at the back box, which older lighting-style installations sometimes lack, and the general question of what happens to the product when the manufacturer stops supporting the app. A smart socket that has become a plain socket is not a disaster; a smart lighting system that has is a bigger problem.
Neither is a reason to avoid them. They are reasons to check depth before ordering and to prefer devices that continue to work manually when whatever cloud service they rely on does not.
And on a new installation, both are easier to plan than to retrofit — the correct box depth costs nothing when the wall is already being chased.
Anything permanently connected rather than plugged in — a water heater, a cooker, an air conditioner, a garden pump — needs a way to be switched off locally.
Without one, the only way to isolate that appliance is at the distribution board. In practice this means that servicing a water heater involves shutting off a circuit that may serve other things, or in a poorly labelled installation, shutting off the property. It also means that anybody working on the appliance is relying on somebody else not switching the board back on.
A local isolator solves all of that. It sits within sight of the appliance, it can be switched off by whoever is working on it, and it stays under their control while they do.
In Dubai the case is strongest for water heaters and air conditioning, both of which get serviced regularly and both of which are frequently installed with no isolator at all. Adding one is a small job and it makes every future visit shorter and safer.
It is worth checking what your fixed appliances have. If a technician arriving to service your water heater has to find your board and guess at a circuit, that is a gap worth closing before the next service rather than during it.
