Making good is the line people forget. Reaching a pipe inside a wall means the wall has to be closed up and painted afterwards.

Home Repair Cost Estimator for Dubai and the UAE

This tool breaks a repair into its parts: the call out, the parts and the labour. It also compares repairing against replacing.

That second comparison is usually the real question. Not what the repair costs, but whether it is worth doing on something that has more failures coming.

All the figures are yours. Put in the quote you were given and the price of a replacement, and it does the comparison.

What a repair quote is made of

Four parts, and a quote that gives one number is hiding the shape of it.

  • Call out

What you pay for somebody to come. It covers travel and the first look, and it usually applies whether or not the job goes ahead.

  • Labour

Time on site. The largest part of most repairs, and the part that grows when access is difficult.

  • Parts

Sometimes trivial, sometimes the whole cost. A cartridge is small; a compressor is not.

  • Making good

Closing up whatever had to be opened. Patching, retiling, repainting. Frequently left out of a quote and then charged.

  • Out of hours

A night, weekend or holiday visit costs more. Worth asking whether the job can wait for daylight.

The repair or replace decision

A useful rough rule: if a repair costs more than about half what a replacement costs, and the item is well into its life, replace it.

The reasoning is that a repair buys you the remaining life of a worn item, and a replacement buys you a full life. Paying most of a new price for a fraction of a new life is a poor trade.

Age is the second half of it. The same repair on a two year old item and a twelve year old one are completely different decisions, because the twelve year old one has other parts approaching the end too.

There is a third factor the arithmetic misses. If the item failing causes disruption, as air conditioning does in August, then reliability has a value beyond the numbers.

And a fourth. An old inefficient item costs more to run every day it survives, which quietly erodes the case for repairing it.

Repairs where access is most of the cost

Some repairs are cheap in parts and expensive in getting to them, and it is worth knowing which before you are surprised.

A leaking pipe inside a wall is the classic. The joint itself is minutes of work. Finding it, opening the wall, and then retiling and repainting is the job.

A concealed cistern valve, a built in shower mixer cartridge, a pipe under a floor slab and anything in a sealed ceiling void are all the same shape of problem.

This is where instruments pay for themselves. Finding a leak precisely means opening one tile instead of a wall, and that changes the making good line dramatically.

It is also the argument for access panels. A panel fitted during the original work turns a wall opening into a screwdriver job for the rest of the building life.

When you get a quote for one of these, ask specifically what is included in making good, and who is responsible for matching tiles.

What makes a repair cost more here

Conditions specific to the UAE that change the number.

  • Summer emergency demand

The hottest months are when things fail and when everybody is booked. Both availability and price move.

  • Out of hours

A night or weekend call costs more. For anything that has already been isolated, morning is cheaper and just as good.

  • Building access rules

A tower may require a registered contractor, insurance and a booked service lift. That is real time before any work starts.

  • Parts availability

Common parts are on the van. An unusual valve or an imported fitting can mean a temporary repair and a return visit.

  • Working around a neighbour

Where a leak affects another unit, coordination and reporting become part of the job.

  • Height and access

Anything needing staging or a platform costs more than the same work at floor level.

Getting a quote you can judge

Ask for the split. Call out, labour, parts, making good. A single number tells you nothing and cannot be compared with anything.

Ask what the diagnosis is, in plain words. A repair quoted without a cause is a guess, and guesses get repeated.

Ask whether the same fault has happened before. Repeated repairs on one item are the clearest signal that replacement is due.

Ask what happens if it turns out to be something else once opened up. Agreeing that in advance prevents the most common dispute.

And for anything large, get a second opinion. Not because the first is dishonest, but because two diagnoses that agree are worth acting on and two that disagree are worth investigating.

Questions people ask

When should I repair and when should I replace?

As a rough rule, replace when the repair costs more than about half a replacement and the item is well into its life. Add reliability and running cost to the decision.

What is a call out charge?

What you pay for somebody to come and look. It usually applies whether or not the work goes ahead, and it is separate from labour and parts.

Why is making good a separate cost?

Because reaching a pipe inside a wall means opening the wall, and closing it up again means patching, retiling and repainting. It is often left out of a quote.

Why is a small leak repair so expensive?

The joint itself is minutes of work. Finding it, opening the wall and putting the room back together is the job. That is why finding it precisely matters so much.

Is an emergency call worth it?

For water you cannot stop, or anything near electricity, yes. For something already isolated, morning is cheaper and the repair is identical.

Should I get a second quote?

For anything large, yes. Two diagnoses that agree are worth acting on. Two that disagree tell you to look harder before spending.
