How It Works
The sequence exists to stop the two mistakes that cause almost all door complaints: hanging into a bad frame, and cutting before the floor is known.
Dimensions at several points, wall construction and thickness, existing frame condition if there is one, and how the space either side is used.
Swing direction, hinge side, leaf type, and what hardware the door has to carry. Changing any of these later is a re-hang rather than an adjustment.
What covering is going down and how thick it is. This one question prevents the commonest post-installation call-out in the trade.
Carefully, because the wall around a frame is easily damaged and making good a torn-out opening costs more than the removal saved.

Benefits
Doors are used more often than anything else in a property and noticed only when they misbehave.
Even gaps and an aligned latch mean the door shuts rather than needing a shove. It is the clearest sign of an installation done properly.
Allowing for the covering before cutting removes the most predictable follow-up visit in the whole trade.

Worth Knowing
Six things, and the first one accounts for most of what goes wrong.
A door is a flat rigid object hung on the edge of an opening. Everything about how it behaves comes from whether that opening is true, which is why the frame is the whole job and the leaf is the part you choose.
Three things have to be right. The frame must be plumb — vertical in both directions, front to back as well as side to side. A jamb that leans front to back makes a door swing open or closed under its own weight, which is the mystery behind doors that will not stay where you leave them. The frame must be square, with the head at right angles to the jambs. And the frame must not be twisted: both jambs have to sit in the same plane, because a leaf is flat and cannot follow a frame that is not.
Twist is the one that catches people out because it is invisible until a door is hung. A frame twisted by even a few millimetres produces a door that touches the stop at one corner and gaps at the diagonally opposite one. No amount of hinge adjustment corrects it — hinges move a door within its plane, and the problem is that the frame is not in one plane.
The frame also has to be rigid. It gets packed at every fixing point so the jamb is supported rather than pulled into a bow when the fixings are tightened, and it is fixed into something that will hold it. A door being slammed is a substantial impact repeated thousands of times, and a frame that has not been packed properly starts to move, at which point the gaps go out and the latch stops meeting the keep.
The lesson for anybody living with a door that has never worked: check the frame before touching the leaf. Planing a door to make it clear a twisted frame produces a door that is now the wrong shape and still does not close, and it is not reversible. This is the most common damage we are asked to undo.
And when an old door is being replaced, the frame is worth assessing on its merits. A sound, square frame is worth keeping and a new leaf hung in it is a simple job. A frame that has rotted at the bottom, been damaged by a forced entry, or was never plumb is worth replacing at the same time, because hanging a new leaf in it inherits every one of its problems.
The gaps around a door are the most visible evidence of how well it was hung, and the one at the bottom causes more return visits than everything else combined.
Down the sides and across the head, the gap should be even and consistent — the same at the top of the hinge side as at the bottom, and the same on the closing side. The eye is very good at spotting a taper, and a gap that narrows from top to bottom reads as poor work even to somebody who could not say what is wrong. The gap also has to be enough to let the leaf move: doors and frames both take up and give off moisture, and a door fitted with almost no clearance in a dry conditioned month will bind in a humid one.
The bottom is different, because it is not only about the leaf. It has to clear the finished floor — and the finished floor is frequently not what is there on the day the door is hung. A door cut to clear a bare screed will catch when tiles go down. A door that cleared the old tiles will catch when timber flooring is laid over them. This single question — what is going on the floor, and how thick is it — is the most useful thing to establish before anything is cut.
There is a second reason for that gap. Rooms need air movement, and in properties with air conditioning the return path is often under the doors. A door sealed tight to the floor in a bedroom can leave the room noticeably harder to cool, because conditioned air has nowhere to go. Bathrooms with extract fans are the clearest case: the fan can only pull out what can get in.
Which sets up a genuine trade-off, because that same gap passes sound, light and cooking smells. Where sound matters — a bedroom off a living area, a home office — the honest position is that a normal internal door is not a sound barrier, and reducing the gap will help slightly and cost you air movement. A heavier leaf does more than sealing the gap does.
One last thing about cutting: how much can come off depends entirely on what the leaf is. A solid timber or solid core door tolerates a reasonable trim. A hollow core door has a solid block of timber only in the rails at the edges, and cutting past that exposes a void with nothing to fix into and nothing to seal — the reason a badly trimmed hollow door has a hollow, drumming bottom edge that then absorbs water. Where a large reduction is needed, the leaf choice has to allow for it from the start.
Doors look interchangeable in a showroom and are not, and the differences show up in weight, sound, hardware and what can be done to them later.
Hollow core doors are a light timber frame with facings and a honeycomb or cardboard filling. They are light, cheap, easy to hang and perfectly reasonable on a cupboard or a low-traffic internal room. What they will not do is stop sound, take a heavy latch or a closer without reinforcement, tolerate much trimming, or survive an impact — a knee through a hollow core door is a familiar and unrepairable event.
Solid core doors have a dense composite core with facings. They are considerably heavier, much better at sound, take hardware anywhere, and can be trimmed within reason. They need hinges rated for the weight — three rather than two on anything substantial — and they need a frame fixed properly, because the mass that makes them good is also what works a poor frame loose.
Solid timber doors are what people picture. They are repairable, refinishable and long-lived, and they move with moisture more than anything else on the list. That movement is manageable and it is the reason all six surfaces have to be finished, including the top and bottom edges nobody sees. A door finished on both faces but bare on the edges takes up moisture unevenly and bows, which is exactly how a door that always worked starts catching after a property has stood empty through a humid summer.
Moisture exposure decides the choice in bathrooms and near external doors. Engineered board at the bottom rail of a bathroom door, standing on a floor that gets wet, will swell — and swollen board does not recover. The design answers are keeping the leaf clear of standing water, sealing the bottom edge and any cut, and choosing a leaf that suits a wet room rather than the cheapest one that matches the others.
External doors are a different problem again, because one face is in full sun and the other is in conditioned air. That is a severe differential, and the responses are the same ones that apply to all exterior timber: finish every surface, expect maintenance, and accept that a coating in this climate is a consumable rather than a permanent state. And glazed doors, aluminium doors, uPVC and sliding patio systems are not carpentry. They are a glass and aluminium trade with their own fabrication and their own hardware, and a carpenter fitting them is the wrong specialist.
Which way a door opens is decided in about four seconds and lived with for years, and it is worth those four seconds being deliberate.
Two things are being chosen: which jamb the hinges go on, and which way the leaf swings. Together they determine what the door does to the room. The default worth starting from is that a door opens into the room it serves, hinged so that it opens against the nearest wall rather than swinging into the middle of the space — that way it takes the least floor area and does not present a blank leaf to somebody walking in.
Then check what it hits. The light switch is the classic: a door hinged on the switch side means reaching around the leaf in the dark. Another door in a hallway is the second — two doors that clash when both are open is a familiar irritation in apartment corridors. Furniture, radiators, walkways and the swing of a wardrobe door are all worth thinking through before anything is fixed.
Bathrooms and small rooms deserve extra thought, because a door swinging inward can leave almost no floor to stand on, and because a person who falls behind an inward-opening door can be very difficult to reach. Outward opening solves both and creates a leaf swinging into a corridor, which has its own problems. There is no universal right answer, only a decision made knowingly.
Where floor space genuinely will not allow a swing, the alternatives are sliding and pocket doors. A surface-mounted slider needs a clear wall the width of the door beside the opening and hardware rated for the leaf weight. A pocket door disappears into the wall, which is elegant and means the wall it slides into cannot carry services or fixings, and any future repair to the mechanism means opening the wall. Both are legitimate and both are decisions to make at the design stage rather than later.
Re-handing an existing door is possible and it is not simply moving the hinges. The hinge recesses, the latch mortice, the strike plate and often the stop all have to move, the old recesses have to be filled convincingly, and on a door with a visible face pattern the leaf may look wrong reversed. It is a real job rather than an afternoon, which is the argument for getting the handing right the first time.
This section exists to draw a boundary rather than to sell anything, because it is the area where well-meant carpentry does the most harm.
A fire-rated door is not a thick leaf. It is a doorset: a tested assembly of leaf, frame, hinges, seals, closer, latch and glazing where fitted, certified as a combination because that combination is what was tested. Its performance depends on every part being what the test used and on it being installed the way the test assumed.
Which means the ordinary things a carpenter does to make a door fit are exactly the things that invalidate it. Trimming the leaf to clear a new floor. Drilling it for different ironmongery. Swapping hinges for whatever matches the others. Removing or painting over the intumescent seals in the frame or the leaf edge — those seals expand under heat and close the gap, and they are not decoration. Packing a frame with unsuitable material, or leaving the gap around the frame unfilled with what the certification requires. Removing a closer because it is annoying.
Any of those can turn a certified doorset into a door that looks identical and is not the thing the building was signed off with. It is invisible until it matters, which is what makes it serious.
So our position is simple and we would rather state it than be asked. We do not alter fire-rated doorsets to make them fit, and we do not substitute their components. Where a rated door is involved — apartment entrance doors, doors onto protected corridors and stairs, plant and riser doors, and anything the building management identifies as rated — the work belongs with the manufacturer, their approved installer, or a specialist appointed by the building, and usually with the building's own approval process.

A door is a leaf, a frame and a set of moving parts, and the moving parts divide neatly into what a carpenter does and what a different specialist does.
Hinges are carpentry, and they are chosen by weight rather than by appearance. A heavy leaf on two hinges concentrates the load, works the screws out of the jamb and produces a door that drops — which then binds on the frame and gets blamed on the leaf. Three hinges on anything substantial, positioned so the middle one takes the sag, and recessed cleanly so the leaf sits where it should.
Stops are carpentry too, and they matter more than they look. A door stop that is fitted before the door is hung and set to where the leaf actually closes gives an even shadow line; one fitted to a nominal position leaves a gap that varies down the height. Floor and wall stops protect handles from punching holes in plaster, which is a small fitting that prevents a recurring repair.
Closers are carpentry to fit and adjustment to live with. They are rated by door size and weight, and an under-specified closer either does not close the door or slams it. Where a closer is on a rated doorset it is part of the certified assembly and is not ours to change.
Latches, locks, cylinders and strikes are a different discipline. They fail in their own ways — a latch that will not retract, a cylinder that is stiff, a strike that has moved, a handle that has worn — and diagnosing them properly is its own page: door lock repair Dubai. Handles and knobs are simple to fit and worth choosing for the spindle and the backset rather than the picture. Doors are quick when the decisions have been made and slow when they have not.
Know what is going on the floor. Not "tiles" — the actual covering and its thickness, including any adhesive bed or underlay. This is the single most useful piece of information you can have ready, and it is the one most often missing.
Decide the handing yourself, standing in the room. Open an imaginary door and walk through it. Check the light switch, the walkway, the furniture and any other door it could clash with. It takes a minute and it is much harder to change later.
Have the doors on site and acclimatised if they are timber. A leaf that arrives from a warehouse and is hung the same hour is at a different moisture content from the room it will live in, and it will move after it is hung.
Say if a door has to take anything unusual — a closer, a heavy handle set, a cat flap, glazing, or a lock beyond a standard latch. Those change the leaf choice, and finding out afterwards can mean a leaf that cannot carry what is being asked of it.
Flag any door you think might be fire rated, particularly an apartment entrance door or anything onto a corridor or stair. Where there is doubt, the building management or the developer's handover documents are the place to check, and it is worth doing before rather than after.
And expect making good. Removing an old frame damages the wall around it more often than not, and the architraves rarely cover exactly what was there before. Filling and decorating are excluded from the carpentry, but they are part of the outcome and worth planning for.
