Symptoms
The symptom usually identifies which of four different repairs the piece needs.
The joints have started to move. Caught now it is a clean re-glue; left alone the joints wear oval and the repair becomes much larger.
The fixing has failed in the board rather than the hardware failing. Re-screwing the same hole holds briefly and then fails faster.
Veneer or laminate letting go at the glue line, usually starting where heat or moisture reached an edge. Small now, spreading later.
Water reached an unsealed cut edge of engineered board. The swelling is permanent — and the water that caused it is usually still arriving.
Moisture trapped in the finish rather than damage to the timber. Often reversible without stripping, depending on what the finish is.
Sunlight. Ultraviolet fades finishes and colours timber unevenly, so a piece half in a sunbeam develops a permanent line across it.
The panel has come out of its groove or the box has racked. Almost always repairable, and almost always worth doing on a decent piece.
The span is too long for the material and the load. Refinishing it changes nothing — the answer is support, a thicker panel or fewer books.
Why TRAXICO

Scope
Structure first, surfaces second, finish last. Doing it in any other order wastes the finish.
Not just the fault you called about. A chair with one loose joint usually has three, and repairing one of them concentrates the load on the others.
Solid, veneered or engineered board, and oil, lacquer, wax or shellac. Both decide what can be done, and getting them wrong makes the damage worse.
Water, heat, sun or overload. A repair that does not address the cause is a repair with a date on it, and the cause is often not in the furniture.
Joints separated, old glue cleaned back to sound material, and components labelled. This is the step that separates a repair from a temporary hold.
Joints re-glued and clamped square, failed fixings plugged or fitted with inserts, splits closed or reinforced, missing sections let in.
Veneer re-laid or patched, chipped edges filled or let in, lippings re-glued, and swollen board replaced where it cannot be saved.
Local repair where the finish allows it, or taking the surface back and refinishing where it does not. Colour matched on an offcut before it goes on the piece.

Usually a great deal more than the repair costs, and occasionally nothing at all.
Most furniture is discarded for faults that are an hour of work — a joint, a hinge, a drawer bottom. The piece is often better than what would replace it.
A joint caught while it is merely loose is a clean re-glue. The same joint after a year of movement has worn oval and needs material let in.
A repaired piece with an aged finish is not the same object as a new one, and for anything inherited or collected that is the entire point.
Loose chair joints, a bowing shelf and a wall unit on failing fixings are all things that give way at the least convenient moment.

A local repair that matches beats a full refinish that flattens the character out of a piece — and it costs less.
Worth Knowing
Furniture fails in a small number of specific ways, and the symptom nearly always identifies which one.
A wooden chair or table almost never breaks because the timber failed. It comes apart because the glue did, and understanding that changes what a good repair looks like.
Glue in a joint is a thin, brittle film. It is very strong in the direction it was designed for and it does not tolerate being flexed. Every time somebody leans back in a chair, the joint moves microscopically, and over years that movement fatigues the glue line until it lets go. Once it has let go, the joint moves visibly — and now the movement wears the timber itself, opening the mortise or rounding the tenon until the parts no longer fit each other.
That is why timing matters more here than anywhere else in furniture repair. A joint that is merely loose can be taken apart, cleaned and re-glued, and it will be as strong as it was. The same joint after a year of being sat on has worn oval, and the repair now needs material let in, packing or a re-cut joint — several times the work, and on cheap furniture often past the point of being worth it.
The wrong repair is the one everybody tries first: squirting glue into the gap of an assembled joint. It cannot work, and it is worth knowing why. The glue cannot reach the failed surfaces because the old glue is still there and it is what is in the way. It cannot be clamped properly because the joint is still assembled. And the fresh glue sets on top of a contaminated surface, which is the definition of a joint that will fail again — except now the surfaces are coated in cured adhesive and a proper repair has been made harder.
The second wrong repair is a screw or a nail through the joint. It holds, briefly, because a fastener resists the movement instead of the joint doing it. It also splits the timber, it prevents the joint being taken apart later, and it moves the stress somewhere else in the frame — which is why one screwed joint in a chair is usually followed by the failure of the one next to it.
The right repair is dull: separate the joint without damaging the parts, clean both surfaces back to sound timber, dry fit to check it still closes, glue, clamp square, and wait. The waiting is not padding. And on a chair, the correct scope is usually the whole frame rather than the one joint you noticed, because a chair with one failed joint has been putting the load somewhere else and the neighbours are further along than they look.
The single most common repair we are called to on modern furniture is a hinge, a runner or a rail that has pulled out, and it is the one most often done wrong.
Chipboard and MDF hold a screw by friction against compressed particles rather than by biting into grain. That works well once. When the screw works loose, it has crushed the material around it, so the hole is now larger and softer than it started. Driving the same screw back in compresses what is left, and it holds for a shorter time. The third attempt does not hold at all.
A longer or fatter screw is the intuitive fix and it is a delay rather than a repair — it moves the same failure a few millimetres deeper into material that is no stronger.
The repairs that last all work the same way: replace the failed material with something solid. Drill the damaged hole out and glue in a hardwood dowel or a plug, let it cure, then drill a fresh pilot into solid material. Or fit a threaded insert designed for board, which spreads the load over a much larger area. Or, where the whole edge has broken away, cut out the damaged section and let in a solid strip before remounting the hardware.
On a cabinet there is usually a second question, which is why the fixing failed. A door that has been hanging on a badly adjusted hinge has been loading it wrongly for years. A drawer carrying more than its runners are rated for pulls its fixings out repeatedly no matter how well they are repaired. A wall unit that was fixed into the wrong anchor for the wall has been working since the day it went up. Repairing the fixing without correcting the cause is a repair with a date on it.
And the honest limit: a carcass where several fixings have failed, the board is soft when pressed, or the edges have broken away in more than one place has reached the end. At that point the sensible conversation is about replacing the unit rather than repairing it, and for a fitted kitchen it may be about the boxes rather than the whole room — which is where kitchen cabinet installation Dubai starts.
Veneer has a reputation problem. It is treated as the cheap option, and for large flat surfaces it is genuinely better engineering than solid timber, because a wide solid panel moves and cups where a veneered one stays flat.
What it does do is fail at the glue line. Veneer is a thin sheet bonded to a core, and heat, moisture or age can break that bond. The symptom is a bubble, a soft area that gives slightly under a thumb, or an edge lifting where somebody has caught it.
The repairs depend on the size and where it is. A small bubble in the middle of a panel can often be re-bonded in place by getting adhesive underneath through a slit made along the grain and clamping it flat while it cures — a repair that is nearly invisible when the slit follows the grain. A lifted edge is generally easier, because the adhesive can be worked in from the side. Missing veneer is a patch: a piece cut to a shape that follows the grain rather than a rectangle, matched for colour and figure, and let in. A rectangular patch is visible forever; an irregular one following the grain often is not.
What cannot be saved is veneer that has lifted across most of a surface, or veneer over a core that has swollen or broken down underneath. Once the substrate has failed, the surface has nothing to bond to. That happens most often on the tops of pieces that have had water standing on them and on the bases of cabinets in wet areas.
Laminate and foil surfaces on board behave similarly but repair worse, because they cannot be re-laid convincingly and cannot be sanded or refinished. A foil-wrapped door with a lifting edge — very common beside a hob or in a bathroom — is generally a replacement rather than a repair, and it is worth checking whether the door alone can be replaced before assuming the unit has to be.
Edges are where nearly all of this starts. Heat, steam and standing water all attack the bond at an edge before they touch the middle, which is why the corner beside a hob and the plinth under a sink fail first.
Marks on furniture come from three different mechanisms, and they need three different responses.
Water that has stayed on the surface produces marks in the finish rather than in the timber. A white ring is moisture trapped within the finish film, and on many finishes it can be drawn back out or the film reworked without stripping anything — which is why it is worth asking before anybody reaches for sandpaper. A dark or black ring is a different thing: the water has gone through the finish into the timber and reacted with it, and that generally means taking the finish off, treating the timber and refinishing.
Water that has soaked into engineered board is not a finish problem at all. The board swells, the fibres break down, and it does not recover when it dries. There is no repair for swollen board other than replacing the affected part. That is the failure at the base of sink cabinets and at the plinths of anything standing where a floor gets wet.
And water damage has a cause. Where a cabinet base has swollen, something has been wet repeatedly — a weeping waste connection, a sweating pipe, a slow appliance leak, a floor washed with too much water. Replacing the board without finding the source produces the same failure again. Where nothing is obviously wet and the damage keeps progressing, it is worth ruling out a concealed leak with leak detection Dubai before doing any carpentry.
Heat damage is usually a finish problem: a clouded patch where a hot dish sat, a softened area, or a lifted edge on veneer or foil where steam has reached it. Finish repairs are often possible; a delaminated foil edge usually is not.
Sun is the slow one, and in this city it is everywhere. Ultraviolet fades finishes and changes the colour of timber itself, unevenly, so a piece half in a sunbeam develops a line that no polish removes. It also embrittles some finishes so they craze. The real repair is refinishing the whole surface rather than the faded part, because a patch on a faded surface simply announces where the patch is. Prevention is worth more: solar control on the glazing, or moving the piece.
One general rule. Any of these damaged areas that is still wet, still hot or still in the sun will damage again after repair. The condition is the job; the mark is the symptom.
Woodwork polishing is not a separate service, it is the last stage of a repair — and it is also the stage where a competent repair can be ruined.
The first question is always what the existing finish is, because it determines everything. A waxed surface can be cleaned and re-waxed easily. An oiled surface can be repaired locally — a mark sanded back and re-oiled, blending into the surrounding area, often invisibly. Lacquered and modern coated surfaces cannot be blended in the same way: they are films, and a repair to a film is either a full recoat of that surface or a visible patch. Shellac and traditional French polish are their own discipline, repairable in place by somebody who knows how, and easily destroyed by anybody who does not.
Getting this wrong is the commonest way a small problem becomes a large one. Sanding a lacquered top to remove a ring produces a dull patch surrounded by gloss, and now the whole surface has to be taken back. Applying an oil over a lacquer produces something that never cures. Using a silicone-based spray polish on a piece that will ever be refinished contaminates the surface and causes defects in any coating applied later — which is why we would rather you did not use them at all on good furniture.
The second question is whether a full refinish is actually wanted. Stripping a piece back removes the patina — the colour and depth that came from decades of light, handling and oxidation — and it does not come back. On a modern piece that is irrelevant. On something old, inherited or genuinely good, a full refinish can take value and character out of a piece that a sympathetic local repair would have kept. Where a piece is genuinely antique, the right answer may be a conservator rather than us, and we will say so.
The third is colour matching, which is judgement rather than a formula. Aged timber is not the colour of new timber with a stain on it, and matching involves building colour in stages and checking under the lighting the piece actually lives in. Anything matched under workshop light and delivered into a warm domestic room can read completely differently. Test pieces on the same material are the only reliable method.
And the honest refusal: where a piece is in poor structural condition, refinishing it is money spent on the part that is not the problem. Structure first, surfaces second, finish last — done in any other order, the finish gets damaged by the work that should have preceded it.
A real share of what we are asked to look at should not be repaired, and it is better to hear that before anybody starts than after.
The clearest case is engineered board that has broken down. Chipboard that is soft when pressed, has failed at several fixings, or has swollen at multiple edges has no sound material left to repair into. Individual fixes are possible and they simply move the next failure somewhere else.
The second is a frame that racks in every direction. If every joint in a chair or a table has failed at once, the piece was assembled with a marginal joint design and repairing all of them costs more than the piece — and the same failure returns because nothing about the design has changed.
The third is anything where the repair cost approaches the replacement cost of something better. That is a straightforward arithmetic conversation, and it should be had at the quote stage rather than discovered afterwards. We would rather lose the job than complete it and have you feel it was not worth it.
The fourth is delamination across a whole surface, or foil and laminate lifting in several places. There is no convincing repair, and refacing it costs more than the door.
The fifth is anything genuinely antique or of significant value. Ordinary furniture repair and conservation are different disciplines with different ethics — conservation prizes reversibility and minimal intervention above appearance. If a piece is important, a conservator is the right call, and saying so is part of the job.
Against all of that, the pieces that are almost always worth repairing: solid timber furniture of any age with loose joints, anything with good hardware and a sound carcass, drawer boxes, and anything you actually like. A joint re-glued properly is not a patched-up piece — it is a piece that will do another few decades.
And where the answer genuinely is replacement, having something made is not automatically the next step either. That decision is set out honestly on custom furniture Dubai, including the cases where buying is the sensible answer.

Say what happened, if you know. Water, heat, a move, a load, or simply time. The cause changes the repair, and a piece that was damaged in transit is a different job from one that has been quietly failing for five years.
Say whether it has been repaired before, and how. Glue in the joint, screws through the frame, filler in the surface or a spray polish used regularly all change what is possible, and finding out mid-repair is worse than knowing at the start.
Expect some work to need removal. Adjustments, fixings, small finish repairs and most cabinet work happen in the property. Full dismantling, veneer work and refinishing need a workshop, dust control and time for adhesives and coatings to cure.
Expect curing to be a wait. Glue, fillers and finishes take the time they take, and a repair rushed off the clamps early is a repair that fails at the same joint.
