A pergola is a framework: posts, beams and an open top of rafters or slats. It defines a space, it supports planting, and it casts shade in a pattern that moves through the day. It is not a roof. Rain passes through it, and so does a proportion of the sun depending on how the slats are spaced and orientated.

That is the first conversation to have. Outdoor timber fails from the bottom up, and almost all of it is decided by one detail: whether the base of the post can dry out.

Decay fungi need moisture. Timber that gets wet and dries is generally fine; timber that stays damp is not. Two habits also matter. The other thing worth building around is the fittings people add later.
