Symptoms
The first few are reasons to choose it. The rest are what a vinyl floor does when something underneath it was skipped.

Vinyl goes down over a prepared base far faster than tile or stone, which is why it dominates offices, clinics and rental turnarounds.
Telegraphing. The material is thin enough to take the shape of whatever it was laid on, and no amount of polish removes it.
Adhesive failure, usually from moisture in the slab, contamination, or the floor being walked on before the adhesive had grabbed.
Moisture vapour pushing up through the slab with nowhere to go, because vinyl seals the surface it is laid on.
A click floor that expanded and had nowhere to move, or that was laid in a cool room and then heated by sun through glass.
A reaction between vinyl and some rubber backings. It stains through the wear layer and does not clean off.
The wear layer was too thin for the traffic. It cannot be repaired, only replaced, which is why the specification matters at the start.
Why TRAXICO

Ground, filled and levelled to a tolerance the material can live with. Vinyl telegraphs everything, and nothing fixes it after the fact.
Vinyl seals a slab. Where the slab is still giving off moisture the adhesive fails, and the only honest answer is to know before laying.
In wet areas a sheet floor is only as continuous as its joints. Welded seams and coved skirtings are what make it a waterproof surface.
Perimeter gaps on click floors and acclimatised material, because a floor in a sunlit room here moves more than most installers plan for.
Over a damp slab, in permanent direct sun, or under a wheelchair on a thin wear layer, another material is the better answer and we will say so.
Scope
The proportion is roughly two parts preparation to one part laying.
What the subfloor is, how flat it is, what is on it now, and where the light falls — because a sunlit floor is a different specification.
How old the slab is, what has been done to it, and whether it needs testing before anything impermeable is bonded to it.
Sheet or tile, glued or click, and the wear layer thickness written down against the expected traffic rather than left to the supplier.
Including adhesive residue, which has to come off rather than be levelled over. Old bonded floors are usually the slowest part of the job.
High spots ground off, hollows filled, then a levelling compound where the base needs it. This is the step that decides how the floor reads.

How It Works
The order is what protects you, because two of these steps cannot be revisited once the floor is down.
Room dimensions, traffic, light, moisture exposure and what the floor has to survive. The wear layer is decided here, not at the counter.
Old covering lifted, adhesive residue removed, and the slab looked at properly. Most surprises in this trade appear at this moment.
Where there is any doubt about slab moisture, it is established first. Laying an impermeable floor over a wet slab is a known failure.
Grinding, filling and levelling compound, then priming. The floor above will be exactly as flat as what is done at this stage.
Left in the room long enough to reach its temperature. Vinyl cut cold and laid warm shrinks; cut warm and laid cool it lifts at the edges.
Set out from the right line, cut, bonded with the adhesive the material calls for, then rolled so it is genuinely in contact rather than resting.
Seams welded where required, thresholds and skirting fitted, and a plain statement of when to walk on it and when it can first be washed.

Worth Knowing
Six things. Two of them are chosen at the counter and four of them happen before the material is unrolled.
A vinyl floor is a stack of layers, and only one of them decides how long it keeps looking new.
The pattern on a vinyl floor is a printed film. It is not the surface you walk on — above it sits a clear layer, the wear layer, and that is what takes the traffic, the grit, the chair castors and the cleaning. When the wear layer goes, the printed film goes with it, and at that point the floor is finished: the pattern has physically gone and no polish, buffing or repair brings it back.
This is why the wear layer thickness is the specification that matters and why it should appear in a quotation as a number. Two floors that look identical on a sample board, with the same pattern and the same price, can have wear layers that differ by a factor of three or four — and they will look completely different after two years in a hallway.
The number is chosen against traffic rather than against budget. A bedroom, a spare room and a study see very little. A living room, a hallway and a kitchen see a great deal. An office corridor, a clinic, a shop or a restaurant see more again, and they also see wheeled loads, which are far harder on a floor than feet.
A related point about castors: office chairs and trolleys concentrate a lot of weight onto tiny points and drag grit across the surface. A thin wear layer under a desk chair develops a dull worn patch in a season. The cheap fix is a chair mat; the correct fix is specifying for it in the first place.
Beneath the wear layer some products carry a factory-applied surface treatment. It helps with cleaning and with early scuffing, and it is worth having — but it is a coating measured in microns and it is not a substitute for thickness. If a supplier is talking about the surface treatment rather than the wear layer, the question has been changed.
The other honest limitation: vinyl cannot be sanded or refinished. Timber can be taken back to bare wood several times; stone can be honed and repolished repeatedly. Vinyl has one life, and its length was set the day the material was chosen.
This corner of the trade has more names than products, and knowing which are genuine distinctions saves being sold the same thing twice.
Start with the biggest confusion. PVC flooring and vinyl flooring are the same material. Vinyl is polyvinyl chloride — PVC — and the two words describe the same polymer. Suppliers here use them interchangeably, sometimes within one quotation, and there is no product difference implied by the choice of word. If two contractors are quoting "PVC" and "vinyl", they are quoting the same family and the comparison should be on wear layer, thickness and construction rather than on the label.
The genuine distinction is format. Sheet vinyl comes in wide rolls and is laid in large pieces, which means very few joints — and the joints it does have can be heat welded into a continuous surface. That makes it the right choice wherever water is genuinely expected: bathrooms, kitchens, clinics, plant rooms and commercial kitchens. Its disadvantage is that a damaged area cannot be swapped out neatly.
LVT — luxury vinyl tile — comes as tiles or planks laid piece by piece. The pattern registration is better, the format allows realistic timber and stone effects, and a single damaged piece can be replaced. Its joints are joints rather than welds, so on their own they are water resistant rather than watertight.
The second genuine distinction is how it is fixed. Glued down is the most stable: fully bonded to the base, dimensionally reliable, and the standard for commercial work. Loose lay relies on the weight and friction of a heavy backing and is quick to lift and replace. Click systems join plank to plank and float over the base, held by nothing — which makes them fast and reversible, and also makes them the format most affected by temperature and by an uneven subfloor.
Then there is the rigid-core family, sold as SPC and WPC. They are vinyl products with a hard mineral or composite core, and they behave differently enough — more dimensionally stable, more tolerant of an imperfect base — to be worth their own page: SPC flooring Dubai.
What matters when comparing quotations is therefore not the name. It is the format, the fixing method, the total thickness and, above everything, the wear layer.
A vinyl floor is between two and five millimetres thick. It does not bridge anything, it does not hide anything, and it takes the shape of whatever it is laid on.
The word for the result is telegraphing. Every ridge of old adhesive, every trowel mark in a screed, every lump of dried plaster, every crack and every joint reads through to the surface — sometimes immediately, sometimes over weeks as the material settles and traffic presses it down. In raking light from a window or a downlight, defects that were invisible on the bare slab become the most obvious thing in the room.
It is also permanent. There is no polish, no filler and no adjustment that removes telegraphing once a floor is bonded down. The only remedy is to lift the floor, prepare the base properly and lay a new one, which is why preparation is not the place to save money.
Doing it properly means several distinct steps rather than a single line called preparation. The old covering comes up, and any adhesive residue is mechanically removed rather than levelled over — old adhesive is soft, and a new floor bonded onto it inherits its failure. High spots are ground off. Cracks and holes are filled with a repair material rather than with levelling compound, which is not designed to fill depth. Then a self-levelling compound goes down over a primer suited to the base, at a thickness that actually corrects the room rather than dusting over it.
Priming matters more than it sounds. It controls how fast the base absorbs water from the compound and from the adhesive, and it binds any remaining dust. A levelling compound poured onto an unprimed, dusty slab dries too quickly at the interface and debonds in sheets later.
And a practical warning about existing floors: laying vinyl over old tile is possible, but the grout lines will telegraph unless the surface is properly filled and levelled. A skim over tile is not enough, and the joint pattern reappearing through a new floor a month after it was laid is one of the commonest complaints in this trade.
Vinyl is impermeable, which is its great advantage in a wet room and its great vulnerability over a slab.
Concrete gives off moisture for a long time after it is poured, and the process is slower than most programmes assume — a slab that feels dry to the hand can still be well above the moisture level an adhesive can tolerate. While the surface is open, that moisture leaves harmlessly. The moment an impermeable floor is bonded over it, it cannot.
What happens next follows a predictable sequence. Vapour collects at the interface. The adhesive, which is generally water sensitive, softens and loses grip. The floor begins to lift at edges and seams, or bubbles appear in the field, or the whole covering starts to move underfoot when walked on. On sheet floors it shows as blisters; on LVT it shows as planks that have shifted and opened. It rarely happens immediately, which is why it is so often blamed on the material or on cleaning rather than on the slab.
The defence is to know rather than to hope. Slab moisture is measured with instruments made for it, and where the reading is too high the options are waiting, or installing a surface damp proof membrane designed to be bonded over. Both cost time or money at the start; both cost far less than lifting a failed floor and doing the whole thing again.
The situations that deserve real suspicion here: a new build where the slab is a few months old, a ground floor with no membrane below the slab, anywhere that has been flooded or has had a plumbing leak, and any room where a previous floor covering failed for no obvious reason. That last one is the most useful clue anybody can give us.
Where the moisture is not construction moisture but water arriving from somewhere — a leaking pipe below, a failed tanking layer, water tracking from a wet room — no floor system solves it, and a new floor over it will fail exactly as the last one did. One more: vinyl is bonded with adhesives and welded with heat, and both need the room to be at a sensible temperature. A floor laid in an unconditioned villa in August behaves differently from the same floor laid in a cooled room, and the difference shows up at the seams.
Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature more than most people expect, and in this climate it is given plenty of opportunity.
The situation that causes the most trouble is a click floor in a room with large glazing. Direct sun through glass heats a floor surface well above the room temperature, and it does it unevenly — a bright band across the floor and shade elsewhere. The heated part expands. If the floor has an adequate expansion gap at every wall and around every fixed object, it moves and nothing happens. If it does not, it has to go somewhere, and it goes upward: planks lift at the joints, the floor peaks in the middle of the room, or joints open when it cools back down.
That is why the expansion gap around the perimeter is not optional and why it has to be maintained everywhere — including at door frames, at columns, at kitchen plinths and around anything fixed through the floor. A floating floor pinned at one point is a floating floor that will buckle.
Glued floors move much less, because the adhesive restrains them. That is a genuine advantage of full bonding in bright rooms, and it is one of the reasons commercial specifications favour it. Rigid core products are also more stable than flexible planks, which is where SPC earns its place.
Acclimatisation is the other half of it. Material stored in a hot warehouse and laid the same day in a cooled room will contract after installation, opening joints and pulling away from walls. Material that spends time in the room it will live in is cut and laid at the size it will actually be. It is an unglamorous step and it is skipped constantly.
Two more heat-related points worth knowing. Very dark floors in direct sun get considerably hotter than light ones, which magnifies all of the above. And heavy objects that sit permanently in one place — a fridge, a heavy sofa, a safe — can leave indentations in flexible vinyl over time; the resistance to that is a property of the material, and it is worth asking about when the floor has to take concentrated loads.
Vinyl is one of the easiest floors to look after and there are three specific things that damage it, none of them obvious.
The first is rubber. Some rubber backings, mats and wheels react with vinyl and produce a yellow or brown stain that migrates into the material itself. It is not on the surface and it does not clean off — the discolouration is within the wear layer and the only remedy is replacement. The rule is simple: if a mat, a castor or an appliance foot is rubber and it will sit on a vinyl floor for a long time, check that it is stated as non-staining, and choose a felt or a proper vinyl-safe mat instead where you cannot.
The second is grit. Vinyl is not scratched by walking; it is scratched by the sand that gets walked in, which acts as an abrasive between shoe and floor. In this city that is a daily reality rather than an occasional one, and a decent barrier mat at every external door does more for a vinyl floor than any cleaning product.
The third is the wrong cleaning. Aggressive solvents, strong alkaline cleaners, steam mops and abrasive pads all attack either the surface treatment or the material. Too much water is its own problem: on a glued floor, water standing at a seam works its way to the adhesive. The right routine is dull — sweep or vacuum often, damp mop with a neutral cleaner, and deal with spills rather than letting them stand.
On repairs, format decides what is possible. An LVT plank can be lifted and replaced, and the result is invisible if spare material from the same batch was kept — which is why we always recommend keeping a box. Sheet vinyl can be patched, and a competent patch in a busy pattern is hard to see, but in a plain floor it will show. Both are covered under floor repair Dubai.
Scratches and scuffs in the wear layer cannot be sanded out. Light scuffs often respond to the right cleaner; anything that has cut through the wear layer into the print is permanent damage to that piece.
And the honest limit worth stating at the start: vinyl has a defined life measured in the thickness of a clear film. Looked after well it is a very good floor for a long time. Specified thin in a busy room, it disappoints faster than anything else on this hub.
A few pieces of information make the difference between a straightforward installation and a job that stops on day one.
What is on the floor now, and what is under that. Tile over screed, an old vinyl bonded down, timber boards, or bare slab — each changes the preparation completely, and the second layer is often the surprise.
The age and history of the slab. New build, recent renovation, a past leak or flood, or a previous floor covering that failed. All of it points at moisture, and moisture is the failure that appears months later.
What the room is for, honestly. Traffic decides the wear layer, and a room described as a spare bedroom that is actually the main route to the balcony gets the wrong specification.
Where the sun falls. A large glazed elevation changes the fixing method conversation, and it is the most common reason a floating floor moves.
Access and timing. Vinyl is fast but it is sequential — lift, prepare, level, cure, prime, lay — and a levelling compound needs the room empty and untrodden while it goes off. In an occupied property that means planning which rooms are out of use and when.
And keep spare material. A box of LVT from the same batch is worth having in a cupboard, because dye lots differ and matching a plank from a different production run is visible in daylight.

Barrier mats at external doors do more good than any product, because vinyl is not damaged by walking but by the sand walked in on shoes.
