Overview
The compressor is the pump at the heart of the system and the single most expensive component in it. That makes it the part most often blamed and most often misdiagnosed.
Electrical testing of the compressor circuit, capacitor and contactor replacement, hard start fitting, overload diagnosis, and full compressor replacement where the motor has genuinely failed.
A capacitor and a compressor produce the same symptom and sit at opposite ends of the price list. Testing takes twenty minutes and decides which one you are paying for.

Symptoms
Several of these have cheap causes and expensive ones that look identical from the outside. That is exactly why none of them should be quoted without testing first.
The motor is being asked to start and cannot. Most often a failed run capacitor, which is inexpensive. Occasionally a seized compressor, which is not. A meter tells them apart in minutes.
Something is drawing far more current than it should at startup. A shorted winding, a failed capacitor forcing locked rotor current, or a contactor welded closed. Stop using the system until it is tested.
Overheating insulation, in the compressor windings or in the wiring feeding it. Switch the system off at the isolator. This is the one symptom that will not wait.
Short cycling on the internal overload. The compressor is getting too hot or drawing too much current and shutting itself down to survive. It is a warning, and it is running out of them.
Internal mechanical wear. Unlike the electrical faults, this one rarely has a cheap ending — but it does need confirming rather than assuming.
Often a slow refrigerant leak that has been quietly cooking the compressor, because the same gas carries the oil that lubricates it. Fixing this early is what avoids the larger bill.
The cause was never found, or the system was not cleaned out after the first failure. A second compressor fitted the same way will go the same way.
Worth a second opinion before you spend. Winding resistance, insulation resistance and capacitor value are measurable facts, and no honest quote skips them.

Every visit starts the same way regardless of what you were told before we arrived.
Supply voltage at the unit under load, isolator condition, cable sizing and terminal tightness. Low or unstable supply damages compressors, and it is checked before anything is condemned.
Run capacitor measured against its rated microfarads — they lose capacity gradually in this heat long before they fail outright. Contactor points inspected for pitting and welding.
Resistance measured across common, start and run terminals and compared with expected values. An open or shorted winding shows here as a number, not as a guess.
The megger test. A winding leaking to earth means the motor has broken down internally, and this is the reading that separates a genuinely failed compressor from a starting problem.
Running amps compared with the rated figure on the data plate, and startup current observed. A motor drawing locked rotor current and not turning is mechanically seized.
Suction and discharge pressures, superheat and condenser cleanliness — the things that decide whether the compressor was killed rather than simply worn out.
Capacitor, contactor, overload or hard start kit fitted on the spot where that is the fault. Where the compressor has genuinely failed, refrigerant is recovered, the compressor swapped, a new drier fitted and the system evacuated properly before recharging.

Worth Knowing
This is the repair with the widest gap between a competent job and a plausible looking one. The detail below is what that gap is made of.
A run capacitor gives the motor the phase shift it needs to start turning. When it weakens, the compressor tries to start, cannot, hums, draws locked rotor current for a few seconds and then trips its internal overload. To anyone standing in front of the unit, that is indistinguishable from a seized compressor. The fan may even keep spinning, which makes it look like the outdoor unit is working.
Capacitors are consumables in this climate. They sit in an enclosure that reaches well above ambient on a summer afternoon, and heat is what ages them. A capacitor rated at 45 microfarads that now reads 31 will fail to start the compressor on the hottest day of the year and work fine on a mild morning, which is why the fault often looks intermittent.
Measuring one takes a capacitance meter and about a minute. The reason this test gets skipped is not difficulty. It is that a capacitor is one of the cheapest parts in the system and a compressor is the most expensive, and the same symptom justifies either invoice. If someone has quoted you a compressor and cannot tell you the measured capacitance and the insulation resistance, they have not established that the compressor is the problem.
Compressors are built to run for fifteen years or more. When one fails at six, something else did it, and that something is still there after the new one is fitted.
The most common killer in Dubai is a slow refrigerant leak. The refrigerant carries the compressor oil around the circuit and back; as the charge drops, oil return falls off and the suction gas that also cools the motor windings arrives too hot and too thin. The compressor then runs hot and under-lubricated for months before it dies. The customer sees only that cooling got gradually worse, which is why AC gas refilling Dubai done as an annual top-up without ever finding the leak is quietly the most expensive habit in this trade.
The second is a condenser choked with dust and salt. It cannot reject heat, so discharge pressure climbs, and the compressor spends every hour pushing against a wall. Third is liquid refrigerant returning down the suction line — from an overcharge, a failed metering device or a badly restricted evaporator. A compressor pumps vapour. Liquid does not compress, and what follows is mechanical rather than gradual.
So the diagnosis is not finished when the compressor is confirmed dead. It is finished when we can say what killed it.
When compressor motor windings break down, the insulation burns inside a sealed circuit full of refrigerant and oil. That produces acid, and the refrigerant then carries it through every metre of pipework, the evaporator, the condenser and the metering device.
Fit a new compressor into that system and the acid attacks the new windings from the first hour. It does not fail immediately, which is the problem — it fails in six months to two years, long after the contractor has been paid and usually just outside whatever warranty was offered.
Doing it properly means testing the oil for acid, flushing the circuit, fitting an oversized suction line drier as well as a liquid line drier, and on a severe burnout returning after some running hours to check the drier and change it again. That is several hours of extra work with no visible result, which is exactly why it gets left out. If you are quoted a compressor replacement and nobody mentions a drier or a flush, you are being quoted for half the job.
Most modern split systems in Dubai use a scroll or rotary compressor; older and larger equipment is often reciprocating. They fail in different ways and the diagnosis follows the type.
Scroll compressors are sealed, have few moving parts and are efficient, but they are direction sensitive on three phase supplies — reverse the rotation and they will run backwards, make an unfamiliar noise, pump nothing, and destroy themselves within minutes. On a three phase unit, phase sequence is checked at commissioning for exactly this reason.
Reciprocating compressors use valves and pistons, so they tend to fail progressively: valves leak, the compressor pumps less and less, and the system cools worse each season while the compressor still runs and sounds normal. That one is diagnosed by pressure and temperature rather than by noise. Rotary compressors, common on smaller splits, are compact and generally reliable but are rarely rebuildable — when one goes, it is a replacement.
A compressor in Dubai works harder than the same compressor almost anywhere else. Design conditions used in cooler markets assume the condenser is rejecting heat into air well below what a Dubai rooftop delivers in July. Head pressure rises with ambient, current draw rises with head pressure, and the compressor runs closer to its limits for months at a time rather than hours.
Add fine sand packing the condenser fins and salt from coastal humidity corroding them, and the margin narrows further. This is the whole argument for AC maintenance Dubai: a clean condenser and a correct charge are not cosmetic, they are the two things keeping the compressor inside its operating envelope through summer.
Supply voltage matters too and is rarely checked. A compressor starting on a sagging supply draws higher current to produce the same torque, and heat in the windings rises with the square of the current. Persistent low voltage at the unit under load is a genuine cause of premature failure and is measured in seconds if anyone bothers.
A compressor is typically the largest share of what a whole outdoor unit costs. That makes the arithmetic unusually stark compared with other repairs.
Under about six years old, replace the compressor — the rest of the system has plenty of life and the economics are clear. Between six and ten, it depends on the condition of the coils, the refrigerant type and whether the cause was a one-off. Past ten, or on any system still running R22, spending the larger part of a new unit's price to keep an old and less efficient one alive rarely makes sense, and AC installation Dubai is the better spend.
We will tell you which of those you are in and show you the readings behind it. The replacement is a smaller job for us than a compressor swap, so this advice is not in our favour, which is precisely why it is worth having.
Many Dubai towers are supplied by Empower, Emicool or a similar provider. Chilled water is produced in a central plant and piped to a fan coil unit above your ceiling. There is no compressor in your apartment and no refrigerant circuit to test.
If cooling is poor in one of those buildings, the fault is the fan coil, the chilled water valve, the filter, the thermostat or the supply from the building — and it belongs with AC repair Dubai or a duct issue rather than here. Anyone offering to repair or replace your compressor in an Empower tower is either mistaken about the building or selling you something that does not exist in it.

If someone told you the compressor is gone without taking them, they have described a symptom rather than diagnosed a cause — and the symptom they saw is more often a capacitor.
Sealed hermetic compressors, which is nearly everything residential in Dubai, cannot be opened and rebuilt on site — those are replaced. But a great many jobs described as compressor repair are repairs to the circuit around it: capacitor, contactor, overload or wiring. Those are fixed in a single visit, and they are why testing first matters so much.
The diagnostic is thirty to forty minutes. A capacitor or contactor is finished within the same visit. A full compressor replacement runs to most of a day once the part is on site, because the refrigerant must be recovered, the compressor changed, driers fitted, the system evacuated properly and the charge weighed back in. A system needing a post-burnout flush takes longer again.
Almost always something else caused it. A slow leak starving the compressor of oil return and cooling, a condenser choked with dust so it runs against high head pressure all summer, liquid refrigerant returning down the suction line, or a persistently low supply voltage. Finding that cause is part of the job, because a new compressor in the same conditions has the same future.

It gives the compressor extra starting torque for the first fraction of a second. It is genuinely useful on an older compressor that has become reluctant to start, or where supply voltage sags. It is not a repair for a failed compressor, and fitting one to mask a fault that keeps getting worse only delays the bill.
It can be a shorted winding, but it can equally be a failed capacitor causing locked rotor current, a welded contactor, or an undersized or faulty breaker. Do not keep resetting it — repeated locked rotor starts damage a compressor that may currently be healthy. Switch it off at the isolator and have it tested.

The important detail on a compressor is what the warranty covers: if the underlying cause was not corrected, no warranty protects you from the same failure. That is why the cause is written into the job sheet alongside the part.
Yes, and it is the step most often skipped. A burned motor puts acid into the oil and the refrigerant carries it through the whole circuit. A new compressor fitted into that will fail again, typically well after the invoice is settled. Flushing, driers and an acid test are part of doing this once rather than twice.
For a system that is tripping a breaker or smelling of burning, treat it as urgent and call rather than use the form — those are switched off first and attended fast. For a unit that simply is not cooling, same or next day across most of Dubai, with the diagnostic tools and common starting components already on the van.
