Symptoms
Low gas produces a fairly specific set of symptoms. Several of these are also caused by other faults, which is why we measure rather than assume.
The classic low-charge symptom. The system is working, just without enough refrigerant to move the heat, so it never reaches the setpoint on a hot afternoon.
A low charge drops the evaporator below freezing and moisture in the air freezes onto it. Switch the unit off and let it thaw before anyone opens it up.
Refrigerant escaping through a hole, or moving through the line at the wrong pressure. Worth acting on quickly — the leak is only going to get larger.
An undercharged compressor runs far longer for the same result. This shows on the DEWA bill well before the room feels noticeably warmer.
Proof of an unrepaired leak. A sealed system holds its charge for years — losing it annually means somebody sold you gas instead of a repair.
Compressor oil travels with refrigerant, so it leaves a dark oily film where gas is escaping. One of the clearest visual signs of a leak.
On ducted systems, a partially charged circuit cools the nearest outlets and gives up before the far ones. Often mistaken for a duct problem.
A low-pressure cut-out protecting the compressor. It is the system telling you the charge is wrong before the compressor is damaged by it.

Worth Knowing
Refrigerant is the most misunderstood part of an air conditioner, and that misunderstanding is sold to people regularly. Here is what is actually true.
This is the single most important thing to understand, and the thing most customers are never told. An air conditioner does not burn refrigerant the way an engine burns fuel. It is a sealed circuit, and the same gas cycles round it indefinitely, changing between liquid and vapour to move heat from inside to outside.
A properly sealed system holds its charge for the whole of its service life. So if a technician tells you the unit "needs gas", the correct next question is where the old gas went. There is only one answer: it leaked out.
Any contractor who tops a system up annually without ever mentioning a leak is selling you the same thing repeatedly. It is not necessarily dishonest — it is quicker and cheaper on the day, and plenty of customers prefer the smaller invoice. But you should be making that choice knowingly rather than being told the gas simply ran out.
Older systems in Dubai still run on R22. It has been phased out under the Montreal Protocol and is no longer produced, so supply comes from reclaimed stock and prices reflect that. If your R22 system has developed a leak, recharging it is a holding measure with a rising cost each time.
Most systems installed in the last decade use R410A. It is readily available and reasonably priced, and it operates at higher pressure than R22, which is why the two cannot be substituted for one another.
Newer units increasingly use R32, which has a lower global warming potential and requires less charge for the same capacity. It is mildly flammable, which means specific handling procedures rather than any risk in normal operation.
The one thing that must never happen is mixing them. A system containing mixed refrigerants cannot be reclaimed, cannot be accurately charged, and generally has to be recovered and replaced. If a technician cannot tell you which refrigerant your system uses, they should not be opening it.
Every system has a specified refrigerant charge, printed on the outdoor unit data plate as a weight in grams or kilograms, with an addition per metre of pipe run beyond a standard length.
The correct way to charge is to evacuate the system completely and then weigh in that exact amount from a cylinder on scales. Superheat and subcooling readings then confirm the system is operating as it should. This takes longer and it is the only method that reliably ends with the right amount inside.
The common alternative is charging by gauge pressure until the readings "look right". Pressure varies with outdoor temperature, indoor load, airflow and coil condition, so this method routinely produces overcharge — which raises head pressure, reduces efficiency, and in the worst case returns liquid to a compressor built only for vapour. Undercharge starves it of oil. Neither is visible to you on the day.
Both of those end in the same place if they go on long enough, which is why AC compressor repair Dubai so often turns out to have started as a charge nobody weighed. A compressor that fails at six years was usually being mistreated for two of them.
Flare connections at the indoor and outdoor units are the most common point, particularly where an installation was rushed or the system has been moved. They can often be remade in minutes.
Coil return bends corrode, especially on outdoor condensers near the coast, where salt-laden air attacks the copper and aluminium. These are repairable when accessible and sometimes not when they are inside the coil block.
Vibration fatigue cracks the line set over years, typically close to where it is clamped. Schrader valve cores — the small valves you connect gauges to — fail quietly and slowly, and are so cheap that a good technician replaces them as a matter of course rather than diagnosing them.
The point is that most leaks are found and repaired at a fraction of the cost of repeated recharging. The ones that are not repairable are usually internal coil failures, and on an older unit that is the point at which the conversation turns to replacement.
A great many Dubai apartments are supplied by Empower, Emicool or a similar provider. In those buildings there is no compressor in your apartment and no refrigerant circuit at all — chilled water arrives from a central plant and a fan coil unit blows air across it.
You cannot need gas, and anybody who offers to refill it is either mistaken or dishonest. If cooling is poor in such an apartment the cause is a fouled coil, a seized actuator valve, a thermostat fault or a problem in the building supply. The first three are handled by AC servicing Dubai; the last is for building management.
At some point the arithmetic turns. An R22 system with a leak inside the coil, on a unit already past ten years old, is asking you to pay reclaimed-price refrigerant into something that will leak again and that has limited life left regardless.
